Spain arrests woman with cocaine breast implants

MADRID (AP) ? Spanish authorities say they have arrested a Panamanian woman arriving at Barcelona airport with 1.38 kilograms (3 pounds) of cocaine concealed in breast implants.

The Interior Ministry said Wednesday that border police noticed fresh scars and blood-stained gauze on her chest as well as pale patches beneath her skin.

The woman said she had recently had breast implant surgery. The statement said police were suspicious and sent her to a local hospital where the implants were removed and found to contain cocaine.

The woman arrived in Spain from Bogota, Colombia.

European authorities routinely submit passengers arriving from Latin America to stringent checks to combat drug smuggling.

University of Iowa becomes one of first to ask about sexual orientation

(Reuters) - The University of Iowa has become the first public U.S. university to ask incoming students about their sexual orientation and gender identity so they can be connected to relevant services once enrolled, the school said on Wednesday.

University officials said in a statement that their admissions office began asking those optional questions this fall in applications for entry.

The university's decision places it in the middle of a debate in higher education over whether to put such questions to students in a bid to become more inclusive, or to avoid doing so because it could be too intrusive.

Elmhurst College in Illinois, a private liberal arts institution, last year became the first U.S. college to ask incoming students their sexual orientation. The much larger University of Iowa is the first public university to take that step.

"From a political and social perspective, this has been a long time coming," Georgina Dodge, University of Iowa's chief diversity officer and associate vice president, said in a statement.

The questionnaires will give the university, which enrolls more than 30,000 students, the knowledge it needs to better offer on-campus resources to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students, Dodge said.

It will also help the university track retention rates, offer support services and gauge interest in campus programs, the school said.

University officials said that if students do not want to out themselves on application questionnaires, they do not need to answer those optional questions.

Campus Pride, a gay and lesbian advocacy organization that has sought to persuade more colleges and universities to include sexual orientation questions on applications, confirmed that Iowa was now the second institution of higher education to take that step after Elmhurst.

Shane Windmeyer, executive director of North Carolina-based Campus Pride, said in a statement that the University of Iowa's move represents "a growing paradigm shift in higher education" to actively involve gay and lesbian students.

Gay and lesbian issues have played a large role in Iowa politics in recent years. In 2009, the state Supreme Court ruled unanimously that Iowa's marriage laws prohibiting same-sex marriage violated the state's constitution, in a ruling that cleared the way for gays and lesbians to wed in the state.

Voters responded in the 2010 elections by tossing off the bench three justices who decided the same-sex marriage case.

REPUBLICANS PRETEND TO MAKE COUNTER-OFFER - Speaker Boehner spokesman Michael Steel tells the world: "We sent the White House a counter-offer that would achieve tax and entitlement reform to solve our looming debt crisis and create more American jobs. As the Speaker said today, we?re still waiting for the White House to identify what spending cuts the president is willing to make as part of the 'balanced approach' he promised the American people. The longer the White House slow-walks this process, the closer our economy gets to the fiscal cliff." Now look, we hate the White House as much as any other Glenn Greenwald-loving blog commenter, but we have yet to see anyone explain why Boehner's position here is not entirely ludicrous. The White House wants tax hikes. The GOP wants spending cuts. So the WH proposed tax hikes. And the GOP demands that the WH also propose spending cuts. But the WH doesn't want spending cuts! Beyond, that is, the hundreds of billions of very specific cuts they've already proposed!

It would be all but impossible to get that revenue level simply by capping deductions and closing loopholes."

AP: "Unswayed by Democrats' pleas and thousands of protesters inside and outside the state Capitol, the House approved two final bills, sending them on to Republican Gov. Rick Snyder. One dealt with private sector workers, the other with government employees. Both measures cleared the Senate last week. The Virginia Employment Commission approved Egerton's benefits, but Egerton balked when he learned that unemployment claimants in Virginia are required to give the government names and phone numbers of their job search contacts. "I did not want to do this as I did not want the negative impression of the VEC checking with employers while they were considering my application," Egerton, 35, told The Huffington Post in an email. UK anti-fraud agency arrests three in Libor probe

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's Serious Fraud Office (SFO) has made the first arrests as part of a global investigation into the manipulation of interbank lending rates.

The SFO said on Tuesday three British men, aged 33, 41 and 47, had been taken to a London police station for interviews. They had all been living in Britain.

Sources had said that regulators and prosecutors in the U.S. and Europe were closing in on individual traders they suspected of colluding to rig key benchmark lending rates such as Libor (London interbank offered rate) and its euro cousin Euribor.

Libor, which underpins around $550 trillion of loans and financial contracts, hit the headlines in June when Barclays was fined a record $450 million for allowing traders to rig it and Euribor and for low-balling rates during the 2007/08 credit crunch.

Other banks remain under investigation in Europe, the United States, Canada and Japan, while UK and U.S. regulators stand accused of either condoning or failing to stop manipulation as the financial crisis brought banks to their knees four years ago.

Microsoft's Windows chief Sinofsky steps down

Microsoft said the head of its flagship Windows division and the driving force behind Windows 8, Steven Sinofsky, will be leaving the company with immediate effect, shortly after the software giant launched the Surface tablet.

Sinofsky, who presented at the launch of the Windows 8 operating system in New York City last month, will be succeeded by Julie Larson-Green, who will head the Windows hardware and software division, the company said in a statement.

Tami Reller will remain chief financial officer and chief marketing officer and will assume responsibility for the business of Windows.

Both executives will report directly to Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, Microsoft said.

The company gave no reason for Sinofsky's departure.

At the launch event in October, Sinofsky and his team showed off a range of devices running Windows 8 from PC makers such as Lenovo Group Ltd and Acer Inc, but devoted most of their energy to the second half of the presentation and the Surface tablet, the first computer Microsoft has made itself.

Gartner analyst Carolina Milanesi said the departure seemed sudden and it was odd that there was no handover period.

"Many link this to the modest sales of Surface but it is hard to think it all boils down to that," she said.

While there was a lot riding on Surface, the departure may have more to do with the kind of change that Surface signified in the Microsoft business model towards hardware, Milanesi said.?

Berkshire Hathaway has partnered with Brookfield to create Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices, a ?new premium franchise brand?, according to their blog?s announcement.

They and others are claiming that it will be a real game-changer, with PCR?s COO Leeann Iacino saying, ?Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices passion for our industry will redefine the future of real estate and the American Dream?.

My thoughts:

• Prudential Real Estate had agreed to quit using the Prudential name in a previous agreement, so they had to come up with something.? Berkshire had invested in PCR years ago, so they were already committed, and apparently the name ?Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices? was the best they could do.

• The management team?for Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices is the same group of guys from Prudential ? all long-timers who are used to the status quo.? You can?t say that Prudential Real Estate has brought any new ground-breakers to the industry since their inception, and?check their website here ? it looks like every other real estate website.? In the ?about? section they are still touting ?the Rock?, with no mention of Berkshire.? They, like other big franchises, enjoy the current system, and won?t rock the boat.

• Warren Buffett is 82, and Charlie Munger is 88 ? what happens when they are gone?? BH will still be a successful enterprise, but with significantly less star power.? Bershire Hathaway hasn?t brought a single innovation to the real estate business, so name recognition is their sole contribution?at least so far.

This isn?t a game-changer ? it is a commitment to keeping the game the same.

In the end, the big loser is the consumer, whose only want and need is transparency and a fair?balance of cost-for-services.? Instead, the franchise companies ? all of them ? will be peddling their name-brand recognition and hype to sucker in more consumers (and agents too) into believing that their company image helps to sell homes.

But selling real estate is an individual sport, and the quality of your agent is all that matters.

Haven?t you seen?great agents that don?t work for a franchise, and lousy agents who do?? There is no guarantee or promise that you will get a great agent just because you called a big-name company.

The big franchises don?t make much money, if any,?from their great agents ? but they make a killing on the agents who only sell a handful of homes (or less) per year.? ?Why do you think they employ 53,000 agents?

Why do you think Buffett got into this racket?? It?s not to change it, it is to exploit it further.
