(AP) ? Jamal Crawford scored 11 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter and the Los Angeles Clippers beat the Utah Jazz 107-96 on Sunday night for their 17th consecutive victory, becoming the third team in NBA history to record a perfect month.

The Clippers went 16-0 in December to join the 1995-96 San Antonio Spurs and 1971-72 Lakers as the only teams to go undefeated over a month. Their franchise-record winning streak is the longest since Boston won 19 in a row four years ago.

Caron Butler led the Clippers with 29 points, making all six of his 3-pointers. Chris Paul added 19 points and nine assists to help them maintain the league's best record at 25-6.

Al Jefferson scored 30 points ? one off his season high ? to lead Utah, which fell victim for the third time during the Clippers' streak. The Jazz lost 116-114 on Friday when the Clippers rallied from 19 points down, and they were beaten 105-104 on Dec. 3, both times at home.

Gordon Hayward added 16 points as the Jazz lost their third in a row and seventh in the last nine games.

Crawford keyed a 10-5 run to open the fourth, highlighted by a 3-pointer and a fast break pull-up jumper that helped the Clippers extend their lead to 89-81. Paul and Griffin didn't join the second unit until 5:55 remained and Utah had closed within four on a basket by Derrick Favors.

That was as close as the Jazz got. The Clippers made 9 of 10 free throws down the stretch and their defense held Utah to one field goal in the final 3:38.

Los Angeles stretched its lead to 71-59 in the third quarter, when Butler scored 10 of their first 17 points.

From there, the Jazz closed on a 17-8 run to pull to 79-76 going into the fourth. Utah briefly took its first lead since early in the game when Jefferson scored over Lamar Odom, but the Jazz committed two costly turnovers in the final 49 seconds.

Paul got fouled and made both free throws, and then Matt Barnes stole the ball from Jamaal Tinsley and fed Paul on the break. He missed but Crawford was there to tip it in and restore the Clippers' lead.

The Clippers shot 62 percent en route to a 54-45 halftime lead, with Butler scoring 17 points in the first quarter. Utah led briefly to start the game when Jefferson scored eight of their first 13 points.

NOTES: Los Angeles improved to 11-3 at home. ... The Jazz fell to 6-13 on the road. ... Clippers F Ronny Turiaf says his right elbow is "messed up." He said he hurt it a couple games ago when he felt discomfort while boxing out. ... Odom's ankle is bothering him. ... The Clippers haven't lost since Nov. 26 at home against New Orleans.

By showing that tiny particles injected into a liquid crystal medium adhere to existing mathematical theorems, physicists at the University of Colorado Boulder have opened the door for the creation of a host of new materials with properties that do not exist in nature.

The findings show that researchers can create a "recipe book" to build new materials of sorts using topology, a major mathematical field that describes the properties that do not change when an object is stretched, bent or otherwise "continuously deformed." Published online Dec. 23 in the journal Nature, the study also is the first to experimentally show that some of the most important topological theorems hold up in the real material world, said CU-Boulder physics department Assistant Professor Ivan Smalyukh, a study senior author.

The research could lead to upgrades in liquid crystal displays, like those used in laptops and television screens, to allow them to interact with light in new and different ways. One possibility is to create liquid crystal displays that are even more energy efficient, Smalyukh said, extending the battery life for the devices they're attached to.

The research was funded in part by Smalyukh's Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, which he received from President Barack Obama in 2010. And the research supports the goals laid out by the White House's Materials Genome Initiative, Smalyukh said, which seeks to deploy "new advanced materials at least twice as fast as possible today, at a fraction of the cost."

Smalyukh, postdoctoral researcher Bohdan Senyuk, and doctoral student Qingkun Liu set up the experiment by creating colloids solutions in which tiny particles are dispersed, but not dissolved, throughout a host medium. Colloids are common in everyday life and include substances such as milk, jelly, paint, smoke, fog and shaving cream.

For this study, the physicists created a colloid by injecting tiny particles into a liquid crystal a substance that behaves somewhat like a liquid and somewhat like a solid. The researchers injected differently shaped particles that represent fundamental building-block shapes in topology. That means each of the particles is distinct from the others and one cannot be turned into the other without cutting or gluing. Objects that look differently can still be considered the same in topology if one can be turned into the other by stretching or bending types of "continuous deformations."

In the field of topology, for example, an object shaped like a donut and an object shaped like a coffee cup are treated the same. That's because a donut shape can be "continuously deformed" into a coffee cup by indenting one side of the donut. But a donut-shaped object cannot be turned into a sphere or a cylinder because the hole in the donut would have to be eliminated by "gluing" the sides of the donut back together or by "cutting" the side of the donut.

Once injected into a liquid crystal, the particles behaved as predicted by topology. "Our study shows that interaction between particles and molecular alignment in liquid crystals follows the predictions of topological theorems, making it possible to use these theorems in designing new composite materials with unique properties that cannot be encountered in nature or synthesized by chemists," Smalyukh said. "These findings lay the groundwork for new applications in experimental studies of low-dimensional topology, with important potential ramifications for many branches of science and technology."

Charities Got Fewer but Bigger Online Gifts Last Week - Prospecting ...

The number of gifts people are making online slowed last week for the second time in a row, compared with this time a year ago, but because donors are giving much larger average gifts, charities are barely feeling a decline in donations.

The number of gifts fell 12 percent last week, following a decline of 6 percent in the second week of December.

Still, the total dollar value of online gifts dropped by less than 1 percent last week because the average online gift rose to $149.21, up from $131.92 in the same week of 2011.

Those figures, based on donations to 8,700 charities that accept donations through the nonprofit group Network for Good, come after a promising start?to the giving season last month and in initial days of December. The increases were triggered in part by the number of appeals for Superstorm Sandy and #GivingTuesday, an effort to increase charitable giving after Thanksgiving.

The lackluster fundraising returns in online giving this month seem to mirror the sluggish pace of holiday sales, which retailers say may be the worst since 2008.

But fundraising experts caution not to take too much from online-giving patterns because those gifts are a small percentage of what many charities raise.

What?s more, not all donations are suffering. Many donors are making large contributions this year because of fears that Congress won?t come to a deal on the fiscal cliff, allowing taxes to rise, and concerns that legislators could limit write-offs for charitable deductions next year.

Tell us what you?re seeing in the total value of donations your charity is raising in the last crucial days of the fundraising season.

See our interactive graphic to track year-end online giving by day.

Will Japan's New Government Restart the Nuclear Power Program? (Slashdot)

An anonymous reader writes in with a story about speculation that Japan might restart its nuclear power program. "Japan's newly-elected Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), a strong supporter of atomic energy use in the past, should restart plants shut after the world's worst nuclear crisis in 25 years, said the CEO of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd . The LDP, headed by Japan's next prime minister Shinzo Abe, won a landslide victory on Sunday, fueling speculation that the new coalition government would take a softer stance on nuclear power. Public opinion remains divided on the role of atomic energy after natural disasters last year triggered a radiation crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi plant."

Year Ends with Mixed Outlook for Microsoft & Nokia

Earlier this week?Appcelerator?released its quarterly mobile app developer survey. The survey of more than 2,700 global developers found they were primarily focused on the iOS and Android operating systems, with Windows Phones, RIM and others relatively far behind. This reflects the "duopoloy" of iOS and Android (increasingly "Samdroid') sales in the global smartphone market. ?

The challenges of creating a strong developer ecosystem for Windows is partly what's holding the mobile OS back. Sales are relatively good in isolated EU markets (e.g, Spain, UK) but lackluster on a global basis and in North America in particular, where Windows continues to lose market share.

According to the survey, about 36% of developers indicated interest in building apps for Windows devices. However Windows Phone's modest market share is creating a kind of Catch-22 for the platform. ?

Screen Shot 2012-12-18 at 9.45.10 AM

Without boosting the perception that Windows has app-parity (at least among the most important ones), there won't be more handset sales. Without more handset sales there won't be more consumer usage and without consumer adoption there are few incentives -- except direct payments from Microsoft -- to develop for the platform. The majority of developers, according to the Appcelerator survey, can only focus on two mobile platforms.?

Screen Shot 2012-12-18 at 9.45.32 AM

Separately, IHS iSuppli released a full-year, 2012?estimate?of?global smartphone market share. The calculation is based on the untrustworthy "shipments" metric. However, the company shows Nokia dropping to third position, Apple in second and Samsung-Android now leading iOS "decisively":

Samsung and Apple ended 2011 in a neck-and-neck battle for leadership in the smartphone market, with only 1 percentage point of market share separating them. However, entering the 2012 year, Samsung moved ahead decisively ahead of Apple with a wide range of Android smartphone offerings. Samsung made significant gains in both the high end as well as the low-cost market with its Galaxy line of smartphones. This diversified market approach has allowed Samsung to address a larger target audience for its phones than Apple?s limited premium iPhone line.

The Samsung and Apple duopoly represents the dominant force in the smartphone market, with the two companies accounting for 49 percent of shipments in 2012, up from 39 percent in 2011. While Nokia and Canada?s Research in Motion (RIM) also held double-digit shares of the market in 2011, Samsung and Apple remain the only two players that will each command a double-digit portion of the smartphone space in 2012.

? Screen Shot 2012-12-18 at 4.10.38 PM

As Google-owned Motorola, LG and HTC struggle for consumer attention and handset sales, Samsung becomes more and more identified with Android in the consumer mind. RIM's forthcoming BlackBerry 10 OS is truly the company's "last hope." Nokia too will likely need to do something fairly radical if it is to remain viable (i.e., adopt Android) in the smartphone market.?

Kurdish troops fire on Iraqi army helicopter in dispute

BAGHDAD | Tue Dec 18, 2012 4:13pm EST

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Troops from Iraq's autonomous Kurdistan opened fire on an Iraqi army helicopter on Tuesday, underscoring tensions between Baghdad's Arab-led central government and the Kurdish region, officials said.

Iraq's government and self-ruled Kurdistan last month both sent troops from their respective armies to reinforce positions around towns in disputed areas where they both claim control as part of a broader feud over oil and territory.

Kurdistan Peshmerga officials said on Tuesday they fired on an Iraqi military helicopter near Sikanyan town just north of the ethnically mixed city of Kirkuk, to keep the aircraft from taking surveillance pictures of their military positions.

"We opened fire at an Iraqi military helicopter flying over our forces," said Anwar Othman, deputy minister for Kurdish military affairs. "This is a clear message that next time our response will be tougher."

A local mayor in the area confirmed the incident. But there was no immediate response from the Iraqi central government.

The growing rift between Baghdad and Kurdistan is the most challenging test to Iraq's federal unity since the last American troops left a year ago, removing a buffer of U.S. military presence from an area long seen as a flashpoint for conflict.

News of the clash came just hours after authorities announced Iraq's President Jalal Talabani, a Kurd, had been hospitalized following a stroke that had left him in critical but stable condition.

A veteran Kurdish politician, Talabani has been a key mediator between Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki's central government and the Kurdistan Regional Government who are growing further apart over how to control oil wealth and the disputed territories between their two regions.

Iraqi armed forces and Kurdish Peshmerga have faced off before only to back off before any major confrontation and U.S. officials have been in talks with both regions to try to ease tensions between them.

The ethnically mixed, disputed areas are a swathe of land separating Iraq from the territory administered by ethnic Kurds in the north, and they include the sensitive city of Kirkuk, which sits atop some of the world's largest oil reserves.

Bombings and attacks across those areas killed more than 30 people on Sunday and Monday in what authorities said was an attempt by insurgents to stoke Arab-Kurdish tensions.

Violence in Iraq has eased since the height of sectarian attacks in 2006-2007. But Sunni Islamists still carry out bombings nearly a decade after the American-led invasion to oust Saddam Hussein. Top Real Estate Projects 2012: Donald & Maureen Green Music ...

Green Music Center Weill Hall

Weill Hall at the Green Music Center on the Sonoma State University campus

ROHNERT PARK ? While early plans for the magnificent and unrivaled Donald and Maureen Green Music Center on the campus of Sonoma State University date back to 1996, construction activities did not begin in earnest until March 1, 2006. The center officially opened this year on Sept. 29.

The initial concept for the center began with the Green family?s dream to create a choral recital hall on campus and see it grow to become a world-class arts center.

When Mr. and Mrs. Green, along with SSU President Ruben Armi?ana and his wife, Marne Olson, visited the Seiji Ozawa Concert Hall at the Tanglewood Music Center in Lenox, Massachusetts in the 1990s, they were impressed with its acoustical perfection and intrigued by its design. They wanted to replicate it on the SSU campus. ?

Fundraising for this project started with an initial contribution from the Green family and was capped by a generous $12 million gift from the Joan and Sanford I. Weill. These funds, combined with an outpouring of donations from nearly 1,800 donors supplemented with private funding and state bond support, combined to make the Green Music Center a reality.

The center is more than an elegant venue for musical artists, vocalists and dancers. It is an outstanding multi-use educational environment for students, as well as an elegant hospitality venue and an executive retreat center.

?The crown jewel of the nearly $150 million, 104,435-square-foot complex occupying 26 acres is the 1,400-seat Joan and Sanford I. Weill Concert Hall designed by Architect William Rawn and Acoustician Lawrence Kirkegaard.

The modular lower rear wall of the Weill Concert Hall opens fully to allow outdoor audiences of more than 5,000 to share musical experiences while seated on a terraced lawn.

In the future, the Weill Commons, an area east of the concert hall, will be transformed into an amphitheater with a 10,000-seat capacity for large-scale outdoor events.

The complex also has a Music Education Hall that encompasses two seminar rooms, three ensemble and rehearsal rooms, seven practice studios, several musical activities rooms as well as faculty and administrative offices.

Support spaces for Weill Hall include an entry courtyard, lobby, public accommodations, dressing rooms, and the Founders? Room where donors meet before or after concerts or other performances.

Schroeder Hall, once completed, will be located adjacent to the Music Education Hall. Designed for choral music, this 250-seat hall will resemble a European cathedral with a high ceiling and slightly curved walls.

Jean Schulz, wife of the late cartoonist, Charles Schulz, named Schroeder Hall after the famous young piano-playing cartoon character. A rare Brombaugh tracker organ will grace the stage-end wall of Schroeder Hall from its own balcony.

Prelude is an elegant 250-seat restaurant with a commercial kitchen. Prelude is open on most concert evenings serving locally grown foods from Sonoma County.

It also serves as an event, wedding and meeting facility for campus and non-campus groups.

An exterior patio includes a water feature, fire pits, an overhead arbor with heaters for cool evenings as well as trees and native landscaping.

Superb acoustics are a hallmark of the spacious rectangular Weill Hall.? ?

The cornice around the perimeter of the ceiling has sound-transparent perforated metal panels.

Attic space functions as a return air plenum, a platform for the lighting rig and an exterior sound buffer.

A lightweight ceiling reduces seismic loads and provides full frequency reflections resulting from a wood-frame construction.

Adjustable banners and curtains allow acoustic liveliness to be tuned to support a wide range of music and audience sizes.

Stage lifts and risers can be arranged to fine-tune ensemble communications as well as the sound on the main floor.

To keep the hall at optimum temperature, conditioned air rises from floor vents and escapes through ceiling vents?and crafted wooden seats were designed for comfort, yet remain acoustically neutral whether occupied or empty.

The center?s programs will go beyond music to include arts and lectures, readings, exhibitions, seminars and stage performances.

Musical productions will encompass symphonic, choral, chamber, jazz, as well as popular/folk, vocal and other styles that appeal to music lovers kinds.

Sports world shaken by Connecticut school shooting

Stars from several different sports took to Twitter on Friday to try and cope with the school shooting in Connecticut, and the NFL asked each of its teams to observe a moment of silence before this weekend's games to pay respect to the victims.

A man killed his mother at home and then opened fire inside the elementary school where she taught, slaying 26 people, including 20 children. The 20-year-old killer, carrying two handguns, then committed suicide at the school.

"It's awful, just an awful day. It really, really is," Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers said before their game at Houston. "This is our jobs. This is not a game for us, it is what we do but when something like this happens, it supersedes job and everything else. As a parent ? I don't know ? this is just awful, awful what happened."

Struggling to stay composed, Cleveland Cavaliers coach Byron Scott paused a couple of times as talked about the tragedy in Newtown, a small community about 60 miles northeast of New York City.

"I have three healthy kids and a beautiful granddaughter," he said. "When you hear about kids who are that young and don't get a chance to live because of something that's so senseless as somebody going in and doing the things that this person did, I think it affects everybody. It puts everything in the right perspective as well. As much as we love this game, this doesn't mean nothing."

From the full slate of NBA games to high school and college football finals, there were moments of silences at sporting events of all sizes. The overhead videoboard at the Barclays Center showed a candle and the town seal of Newtown as the Nets and Pistons paused for reflection before their game in Brooklyn.

The NFL sent a memo asking for each of its teams to observe a moment of silence before this weekend's games.

"This shocking event has brought the nation together in grieving for the victims and their families as well as the survivors," the note read. "We believe it is appropriate and important for us to collectively recognize and participate in the grieving process at our games this weekend, as we have done on other occasions."

Many athletes took to social media websites to process what happened, discussing their shock and horror, and openly worrying about their kids at school.

"Innocent victims just gone," Miami Heat star LeBron James said in a series of posts on Twitter. "This is really messing with my mind. Kids is everything to me! And of course i have 2 of my own in elementary school as well. I can't imagine it happening to my kids school. I and the rest of the families would be devastated! Something has to be done."

Golfer John Daly talked about home schooling his children, and outspoken Minnesota Vikings punter Chris Kluwe wondered about the road ahead.

"The way we deal with this tragedy in CT will tell us a lot about where we're headed as a society. Do we only address the symptoms (i.e. just gun control laws)? Or do we also address the disease ? how we treat each other and those who need help," Kluwe said in a couple of posts on Twitter.

There also was some anger.

Montreal Canadiens captain Brian Gionta tweeted: "Not sure if there is anything lower than harming innocent children." He ended the tweet with a hashtag of "coward," then was critical of the media interviewing young children outside the school.

"At some point, we've got to get past bureaucracy and all the nonsense and do something about this so our kids can be safe," said New Orleans Hornets coach Monty Williams, who has five children ranging in age from 2 to 14.

"If we can go to outer space and take care of trees and rivers and animals, we can do a better job of taking care of our kids. It's just a sad situation."

Tagg the Pet Tracker

There are few things more valuable to pet owners than the safety and well being of their furry companions. That's why Tagg the Pet Tracker ($99.95 direct, plus $7.95/month) seems like an indispensible gadget for pet lovers. If you can handle the up-front price and recurring service costs, the Tagg adds peace of mind with its GPS-enabled tracking service, as well as a nifty way to make sure your pets are getting enough exercise throughout the day.?

Design, Setup, and Service Plans
The Tagg Tracker looks a lot like a modern bark collar or electric fence collar, with a discrete white and grey body that measures 1.49 by 3.18 by 0.77 inches and weighs 1.16 ounces. It's relatively unobtrusive for medium to large sized dogs, like the labradoodle I tested with, but might be a bit unwieldy with smaller breeds. While I tested on a dog, you can use the Tagg on cats and any other large pets you'd like to keep tabs on. It feels sturdily built, with a water-resistant build that can withstand bath time, but don't expect it to hold up under water for long periods. There's a single large button on the front face of the Tagg, which controls power and tracking modes, with an LED indicator light below. The Tagg Tracker clips onto collars using the included collar clip, and comes with a docking station for charging and software updates. ?

Setup takes place online, and all you have to do with the Tagg is place it on the docking station for a charge and software update. You have to register your Tagg Tracker's serial number (found on the bottom), enter billing information, register your pet (name, breed, weight, etc.), set up alerts, and designate your home tracking zone (more on that later). The whole process takes about 20 minutes, and you'll be able to adjust any settings later.

For $99.95 you get the Tagg Tracker, docking station, collar clip, and 90 days of tracking service. After the initial three months, you'll automatically be billed $7.95 per month until you cancel your service. You can also add more pets with individual trackers for $89.95 apiece and an additional $0.95 per month per pet.

Location and Activity Tracking
With a recent update, the Tagg Tracker now serves a dual purpose?not only keeping tabs on your pet's location, but also his activity level. During initial setup, you should have designated a home zone, which can be stretched to cover a single city block or your entire neighborhood. You also choose whether you want alerts sent via text, email, or both, and if you want to add other contacts to your alert network. If your pet strays outside of the designated home zone, you'll receive a notification that shows your pets location on a map, gives you an approximate street address, and displays an option to trigger tracking mode. Tracking mode pings the Tagg Tracker every 3 minutes for 30 minutes, sending you an alert of your pet's approximate location?perfect for tracking down a pet on the move. If you know you'll be leaving the home zone, simply press the button on the Tagg Tracker twice to enable trip mode. The LED will blink blue three times, and you'll have 15 minutes before regular tracking is re-enabled. You can restart trip mode multiple times if your trip lasts longer than 15 minutes, but I wish there was an option to adjust the length of trips. Alternatively, you can hold the power button to turn Tagg off, but this isn't recommended.?

Activity tracking uses the built-in accelerometer to determine how active your pet has been throughout the course of the day?think of it as a FitBit ?or a Nike+ Fuel Band?for your pet. Much like Nike, Tagg has its own system of quantifying activity, whittling down fetching, climbing stairs, napping, and everything in between, into Tagg Points. You can set a daily goal on the Tagg website, and get real-time updates throughout the day. Tagg Points are broken down into resting, lightly active, moderately active, and highly active, with a basic guide as to how many points your dog should be getting, based on breed activity level. This is actually my favorite feature, as I could see activity plotted along a timeline, giving me a good idea of what triggered the most activity and when.?I tested the Tagg on a dog, but it's designed for use with cats or any other large pet you'd like to keep tabs on.?

My test subject was a one-and-a-half year-old male Labradoodle named Thornton. He's incredibly well behaved, but he's still a puppy at heart and I wouldn't put bolting out of an unattended door past him. He's also very lean and active, so I was curious to see just how well he'd fare in Tagg points. I had some concerns about the comfort of the Tagg Tracker on his collar, but he never seemed to mind, whether he was running about or sprawled out in bed.

After setting up the designated home zone, three city blocks in my case, I took Thornton for a walk around the neighborhood. I deliberately took him outside of the home zone to test how accurate the Tagg Tracker was, and how timely the alerts were. Within about three minutes of exiting the home zone, I received a text and email alert with a surprisingly accurate location?it knew the exact street corner I was standing on. The alert read: "I'm Outside the Home Tagg Zone" and gave me the time and approximate street address, with an option to enable tracking mode. I enabled tracking mode to get an idea of how quick and accurate the results were. I received an alert every three minutes and, aside from one inaccurate location, I had a very good idea of the path Thornton was on. When I returned to the home zone, I received an alert that read: "It's good to be back in my Tagg zone!"

Trip mode works as advertised, but I found myself forgetting to enable it on short errands I'd run throughout the day, and I think the 15-minute time frame is a bit short. The alerts aren't a huge nuisance, though, and remembering to enable Trip mode will likely become part of your routine if you use the Tagg everyday.

Activity tracking worked equally as well, with a detailed view of just how much exercise Thornton was getting. Tagg designates Labrador Retreivers as Medium Energy dogs, with a target of 225-350 Tagg points in a day. At 9 a.m., when I took Thornton for his morning walk, activity levels spiked from resting to moderately active, then leveled back out to lightly active when we sat down to watch some TV. I took Thornton to the dog park at 3 p.m. and saw activity levels spike to highly active, then level back out to simply resting status when we got back. All told, Thornton racked up 353 Tagg points that day, with 4 hours and 24 minutes of total time active, and I had a pretty good time keeping tabs on his activity throughout the day.

All location and activity data is transmitted wirelessly from the Tagg Tracker, so you'll only really need to dock the Tagg to charge. The built-in battery is rated at up to 30 days of use, and will send you an alert when it's time to charge. There's also free iOS and Android apps, which you can use to track your pet's location, but activity tracking is only accessible via the website.

Conclusions
If you live in an urban setting where your dog is almost always either inside or on a leash, the Tagg probably isn't a necessity. But for suburban or rural homes, where you let your dog roam around parks and backyards, the Tagg could be an invaluable safety net should your pet decide to stray too far from home. The Tagg's activity tracking feature is also really well implemented and fun to use, and will likely help encourage you to keep your pets in tip-top shape. For simple tracking, the closest thing we've tested is the Garmin GTU 10, an all-purpose GPS device that's designed for people, pets, and valuables. You get a similar geo-fence feature that alerts you when the GTU 10 exits a designated zone, but it lacks the activity tracking features of the Tagg. It's also $199 with a $50/year service fee. At $99.95 up front and $7.95 per month, the Tagg Tracker is a bit pricey, but really, you can't put a price on the safety and well-being of your pets.

Spain arrests woman with cocaine breast implants

MADRID (AP) ? Spanish authorities say they have arrested a Panamanian woman arriving at Barcelona airport with 1.38 kilograms (3 pounds) of cocaine concealed in breast implants.

The Interior Ministry said Wednesday that border police noticed fresh scars and blood-stained gauze on her chest as well as pale patches beneath her skin.

The woman said she had recently had breast implant surgery. The statement said police were suspicious and sent her to a local hospital where the implants were removed and found to contain cocaine.

The woman arrived in Spain from Bogota, Colombia.

European authorities routinely submit passengers arriving from Latin America to stringent checks to combat drug smuggling.

University of Iowa becomes one of first to ask about sexual orientation

(Reuters) - The University of Iowa has become the first public U.S. university to ask incoming students about their sexual orientation and gender identity so they can be connected to relevant services once enrolled, the school said on Wednesday.

University officials said in a statement that their admissions office began asking those optional questions this fall in applications for entry.

The university's decision places it in the middle of a debate in higher education over whether to put such questions to students in a bid to become more inclusive, or to avoid doing so because it could be too intrusive.

Elmhurst College in Illinois, a private liberal arts institution, last year became the first U.S. college to ask incoming students their sexual orientation. The much larger University of Iowa is the first public university to take that step.

"From a political and social perspective, this has been a long time coming," Georgina Dodge, University of Iowa's chief diversity officer and associate vice president, said in a statement.

The questionnaires will give the university, which enrolls more than 30,000 students, the knowledge it needs to better offer on-campus resources to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students, Dodge said.

It will also help the university track retention rates, offer support services and gauge interest in campus programs, the school said.

University officials said that if students do not want to out themselves on application questionnaires, they do not need to answer those optional questions.

Campus Pride, a gay and lesbian advocacy organization that has sought to persuade more colleges and universities to include sexual orientation questions on applications, confirmed that Iowa was now the second institution of higher education to take that step after Elmhurst.

Shane Windmeyer, executive director of North Carolina-based Campus Pride, said in a statement that the University of Iowa's move represents "a growing paradigm shift in higher education" to actively involve gay and lesbian students.

Gay and lesbian issues have played a large role in Iowa politics in recent years. In 2009, the state Supreme Court ruled unanimously that Iowa's marriage laws prohibiting same-sex marriage violated the state's constitution, in a ruling that cleared the way for gays and lesbians to wed in the state.

Voters responded in the 2010 elections by tossing off the bench three justices who decided the same-sex marriage case.

HUFFPOST HILL - Beleaguered State Gets Much-Needed Sadness Infusion

After weeks of not blinking, some reports indicate that fiscal cliff negotiators may have reached for the Visine. Mitch McConnell's approval rating is so low you'd think he was Congress. And Antonin Scalia suggested society's embrace of homosexuality is a precursor to its acceptance of beastiality and murder. Hollywood executives inform us Justice Scalia will feel validated by the crime of passion at the end of "Marley and Me 2: Paris Nights." This is HUFFPOST HILL for Tuesday, December 11th, 2012:

REPUBLICANS PRETEND TO MAKE COUNTER-OFFER - Speaker Boehner spokesman Michael Steel tells the world: "We sent the White House a counter-offer that would achieve tax and entitlement reform to solve our looming debt crisis and create more American jobs. As the Speaker said today, we?re still waiting for the White House to identify what spending cuts the president is willing to make as part of the 'balanced approach' he promised the American people. The longer the White House slow-walks this process, the closer our economy gets to the fiscal cliff." Now look, we hate the White House as much as any other Glenn Greenwald-loving blog commenter, but we have yet to see anyone explain why Boehner's position here is not entirely ludicrous. The White House wants tax hikes. The GOP wants spending cuts. So the WH proposed tax hikes. And the GOP demands that the WH also propose spending cuts. But the WH doesn't want spending cuts! Beyond, that is, the hundreds of billions of very specific cuts they've already proposed!

@AP: BREAKING: AP source: Obama, Speaker Boehner discussed fiscal cliff Tuesday after exchange of offers.

Update from Sam Stein: "Jill Jackson, a reporter for CBS News, tweets out that the Republican offer contains $1.4 trillion in new revenue. Boehner's office did not immediately return a request for confirmation. But if that number is indeed correct, it seems likely that the speaker has ostensibly signed off on tax rates going up on some income. It would be all but impossible to get that revenue level simply by capping deductions and closing loopholes."

@chadpergram: WH drops from $1.6 to $1.4 trillion in revenue. Top Ways & Means D Levin says "It's basically in the ballpark" as something he can live with

@edhenrytv: Sensing optimism tonight from President's allies about fiscal deal, one outside adviser told me they're now "75 pct" of the way toward deal

(U)AW HELL NO: MICHIGAN HOUSE PASSES RIGHT-TO-WORK LEGISLATION - Apparently the union thugs didn't wrap enough chains around their knuckles and/or didn't slowly beat pipes against their palms in a sufficiently menacing fashion. AP: "Unswayed by Democrats' pleas and thousands of protesters inside and outside the state Capitol, the House approved two final bills, sending them on to Republican Gov. Rick Snyder. One dealt with private sector workers, the other with government employees. Both measures cleared the Senate last week. Snyder is expected to sign the measures into law as early as Wednesday that would make Michigan the 24th state with right-to-work laws, which ban requirements that nonunion employees pay unions for negotiating contracts and other services." [HuffPost]

Options for the bill's opponents: "Line-Item Veto: Snyder could sign right to work into law but still throw labor a bone by using his line-item veto power to strike the $1 million appropriation in the bill... That way, the law would be eligible to go on the ballot... Citizens Initiative: This route may be labor's best route to the ballot box... labor supporters could need to gather a high number of signatories to force a vote to repeal the law, similar to what was done in Ohio with the repeal of an anti-collective bargaining law...Repeal Legislation: Not all Republicans were on board with right to work in this session, so Democrats could attempt to gain some GOP support for a bill to repeal the law. Recalling GOP Lawmakers: Labor leaders have raised the suggestion of trying to recall Republicans who back right to work...2014 Elections: Snyder is up for reelection in 2014...Lawsuits: A union activist has already filed a lawsuit... 'alleging violations of the Open Meetings Act after the Michigan State Police barred the doors to the Capitol,'according to the Detroit Free Press. The Associated Press recently reported that opponents are considering other possible lawsuits." [HuffPost's Amanda Terkel]

DAILY DELANEY DOWNER - Matthew Egerton applied for unemployment insurance as soon as he lost his health care administration job at the very end of 2010. The Virginia Employment Commission approved Egerton's benefits, but Egerton balked when he learned that unemployment claimants in Virginia are required to give the government names and phone numbers of their job search contacts. "I did not want to do this as I did not want the negative impression of the VEC checking with employers while they were considering my application," Egerton, 35, told The Huffington Post in an email. "I did not want the risk of seeming like a bad candidate and hurting my chances of being accepted." While stories of waste and fraud in the unemployment system often dominate headlines, fewer people are gaming the system than avoiding it altogether, according to a recent study for the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. On average, the study found, savings from unpaid benefits are seven times larger than the cost of improper payments over the past 22 years. Your faithful DDD tried to ask Orrin Hatch about this today, but he said send it to the office and got on the Senate subway. [HuffPost]

FISCAL CLIFF: BOEHNER UNIMPRESSED - You'd think that President Obama's fiscal cliff offer was a press conference question blurted out by Luke Russert. Mike McAuliff: "House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) said on Tuesday that President Barack Obama still has not gotten serious about dealing with the impending 'fiscal cliff,' saying the White House has yet to offer anything that can pass muster with the GOP...In Obama's most recent offer, the White House suggested raising some $1.6 trillion in taxes, while cutting about $400 billion from Medicare and investing more cash in economic stimulus. Although Boehner and Obama met over the weekend for discussions that both sides described as positive, Boehner did not sound encouraging in his House floor remarks at noon on Tuesday." [HuffPost]

A fiscal cliff agreement might result in your grandmother donning a crocheted ski mask and holding up a CVS for its Simcor stash - Jeff Young: "Raising the Medicare eligibility age from 65 to 67 could leave as many as 435,000 older Americans without health insurance, according to a report published Tuesday...Republicans have floated raising the Medicare age to 67 as one way to reduce the program's spending -- an idea Obama reportedly considered during negotiations last year...The combined result of an increase in the Medicare eligibility age and states opting out of the Medicaid expansion could be 435,000 people between 65 and 67 years old without health insurance, the Center for American Progress study concludes. In states like Texas, Mississippi and Louisiana that don't expand Medicaid, most of the poorest older people 'will have nowhere to turn for coverage,' according to the study." [HuffPost]

2014: CROSSROADS ALREADY CHURNING OUT SCARY VOICE ADS - And they come complete with sad repetitive piano accompaniment, which leaves you with the feeling that Mary Landrieu is adding arsenic to your toddler's sippy cup. Paul Blumenthal: "Crossroads GPS, the nonprofit co-founded by Karl Rove, has launched a series of radio ads to pressure five Democratic senators to reject President Barack Obama's outline of a "fiscal cliff" deal, particularly higher tax rates for the wealthy... The lawmakers in Crossroads' sights are longtime Sens. Jay Rockefeller (D-W.V.), Mary Landrieu (D-La.) and Tim Johnson (D-S.D.) and first-term Sens. Mark Begich (D-Alaska) and Kay Hagan (D-N.C.)... Other than naming an individual senator, the five ads themselves are identical, calling on the lawmakers to reject President Obama's 'massive tax increases and even more debt' and urging 'bipartisan solutions to strengthen Medicare and Social Security and tax reforms that raise more revenue without killing jobs.'" [HuffPost]

Ashley Judd, not actually in terrible shape: "Although Kentucky remains deeply Republican, [Mitch] McConnell's low approval ratings -- the worst of any senator nationally, according to PPP -- could make him vulnerable. Just 37 percent of Kentucky voters approve of his performance, while 55 percent disapprove... One challenger he might not have expected is Judd, who is reported to be seriously considering a Democratic bid. PPP found that Judd would be the top choice of Democratic primary voters, and would trail McConnell by just four points in a hypothetical matchup, 43 percent to his 47 percent." [HuffPost's Ariel Edwards-Levy]

Cory Booker, take note: "State Sen. Barbara Buono announced Tuesday she will seek the Democratic nomination for governor, accusing Republican Gov. Chris Christie of 'trickle-down economics' that she said have stagnated economic growth in New Jersey and left the state with the highest jobless rate in three decades. Buono, who has served in the Legislature since 1994, said the governor was right to declare the rebuilding of the state from Superstorm Sandy an urgent priority, but she said 'that's not the only rebuilding that needs to be done.'" [AP]

NIKKI HALEY FINALIZES SENATE SHORTLIST - Sadly, there's no Stephen Colbert, Alvin Greene, Joe "You lie!" Wilson or HuffPost Hill's dark horse, The University of South Carolina Gamecock. CNN: "Her final choices for the seat are Rep. Tim Scott, Rep. Trey Gowdy, former state Attorney General Henry McMaster, former South Carolina First Lady Jenny Sanford and Catherine Templeton, a conservative attorney chosen by Haley to head the state Department of Health and Environmental Control. One thing they have in common: a warm personal relationship with the governor, who is known to prize loyalty. 'All of them have proven to be fighters in their lives and Nikki respects that and likes them all,' the GOP source said. 'She respects their service and thinks any of them will make a great senator.'" [CNN]

Lindsey Graham would welcome a Stephen Colbert Senate candidacy. "It's always good to laugh, he's funny, but I'm not so sure we have a comedy deficit as much as a fiscal deficit," Graham said during an interview with Elise Foley. "At the end of the day, Gov. Haley will appoint someone who will step right in and hit the ground running." Or maybe Graham is just tired of Al Franken discussing farm regulations in the Stuart Smalley voice and wants to freshen things up. [HuffPost]

JOURNALISM: POLITICO ELUCIDATES LINCOLN CHAFEE'S WET DREAM - This morning Mike Allen and Jim VandeHei, having bravely embedded themselves in Erskine Bowles' occipital lobe, published a piece that allegedly reveals Washington's secret plan to fix our ailing economy. Yet the article couldn't be more blandly center-right if it joined Third Way and created a Google alert for David Brooks. Politico: "Most politicians in the most powerful positions in Washington agree in private that there are a half-dozen or so big things they could and should do that could put a rocket booster on the U.S. economy - but they are too timid to say it in public ... The current tax-and-spending debate only flirts with what these insiders say needs to be done. Instead, top White House and congressional leaders talk privately of the need for tax reform that goes way beyond individuals and rates; much deeper Social Security and Medicare changes than currently envisioned; quick movement on trade agreements, including a proposed one with Europe; an energy policy that exploits the oil and gas boom; and allowing foreign-born students with science expertise to stay here and start businesses ... Next year represents the best opportunity in decades to do something about some or all of them, according to those in the trenches. It starts with taxes." [Politico]

Also amazing: "No doubt, there are environmental concerns, especially for drinking water."

Powerful lawmakers tell HuffPost Hill we should take steps to avoid transforming into an economic dystopia where militias fight for territory and precious resources in dilapidated school buses and dune buggies armed with MG42s.

SCALIA: IT'S ADAM AND EVE, NOT ADAM AND STEVE SOME DONKEY ADAM DATED - According to the Supreme Supreme justice, people will start making eyes at their Scottish terriers and murder anyone who doesn't cover their mouth when they sneeze, because gay marriage is just that awful. AP: "Speaking at Princeton University, Scalia was asked by a gay student why he equates laws banning sodomy with those barring beastiality and murder. 'I don't think it's necessary, but I think it's effective,' Scalia said, adding that legislative bodies can ban what they believe to be immoral.'It's a form of argument that I thought you would have known, which is called the "reduction to the absurd";' Scalia told [freshman Duncan] Hosie of San Francisco during the question-and-answer period.'"If we cannot have moral feelings against homosexuality, can we have it against murder? Can we have it against other things?' Scalia said he is not equating sodomy with murder but drawing a parallel between the bans on both. Then he deadpanned: 'I'm surprised you aren't persuaded.'" [HuffPost]

Bradley Manning update: "Closing arguments for a hearing over alleged WikiLeaks source Bradley Manning's treatment in pre-trial detention ended Tuesday, with his lawyer arguing that his conditions in the Quantico Marine brig were so degrading that all the charges against him should be dropped...whether Manning's treatment amounted to unlawful punishment, and whether brig officials intended to inflict it, were the critical issues at hand as Manning's attorney essentially put the government on trial." [HuffPost's Matt Sledge]

SUPREME COURT JUSTICE NOT CHILD OF IMMENSE WEALTH AND PRIVILEGE: BOOK - In her forthcoming memoir, Supreme Court Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor describes the challenges she faced as an Andover prefect reflects on her humble beginnings. AP: "Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor says in her upcoming memoir that her lifelong battle against diabetes and the fear that she might die early played a big part in her decision not to have children... Sotomayor also defends affirmative action -- under which she was admitted to Princeton University and Yale Law School -- as needed to get disadvantaged students to the starting line of a race to success. She grew up so poor in the South Bronx that her family never even had a bank account...it tells the story of her rise from a tenement in which English was rarely spoken to her entry into service as a federal judge in 1992. She includes an especially painful encounter with illegal drugs in her description of her beloved first cousin Nelson, who eventually died of AIDS that she said he contracted through a contaminated needle." [AP]

PHILADELPHIA SOCIETY SOIREE IS EVERYTHING THAT'S WRONG WITH EVERYTHING - Naked Philadelphia: "1400 people attended this year's [Pennsylvania Society dinner at the Waldorf Astoria in Manhattan on December 9] while thousands more attended the lavish parties on the sidelines of the event...The next big race in Pennsylvania is the governor's race in 2014. Governor Corbett, speaking during the Pennsylvania Manufacturing Seminar at the ornate Metropolitan Club, tried to reassure business leaders that he will soon be revealing his plans for controlling the state's pension costs, privatization of the liquor stores, and repairing the ailing infrastructure...The head of the Fels Institute of Public Policy at Penn, David Thornburgh, believes that Corbett will fine. 'Ridge['s] poll numbers looked the same after two years. He won re-election, " he noted. He doubts that [Rep. Allyson] Schwartz has a chance. 'The state is not ready for a Jewish, liberal woman from Philadelphia that used to run an abortion clinic,' said the son of a former Pennsylvania Governor...A relaxed party atmosphere often loosens the lips of politicians. A new representative in Harrisburg accidentally divulged that one of his colleagues is so cheap that he makes staffers pay for their own toilet paper." [Naked Philadelphia ]
