(AP) ? Two men were found guilty Monday of involvement in an al-Qaida plot to attack a Danish newspaper that caricturerd the Prophet Muhammad, the first convictions under Norway's anti-terror laws.

A third defendant was acquitted of terror charges but convicted of helping the others acquire explosives.

Investigators say the plot was linked to the same al-Qaida planners behind thwarted attacks against the New York subway system and a shopping mall Manchester, England, in 2009.

The Oslo district court sentenced alleged ringleader Mikael Davud, to seven years in prison and co-defendant Shawan Sadek Saeed Bujak to three and a half years.

Judge Oddmund Svarteberg said the court found that Davud, a Chinese Muslim, "planned the attack together with al-Qaida." Bujak was deeply involved in the preparations, but it couldn't be proved that he was aware of Davud's contacts with al-Qaida, the judge said.

The third defendant, David Jakobsen, who assisted police in the investigation, was convicted on an explosives charge and sentenced to four months in prison ? time he's already served in pretrial detention.

It wasn't immediately clear if any of the defendants would appeal.

The case was Norway's most high-profile terror investigation until last July, when a right-wing extremist killed 77 people in a bomb and shooting massacre.

The three men, who were arrested in July 2010, made some admissions but pleaded innocent to terror conspiracy charges and rejected any links to al-Qaida.

During the trial Davud denied he was taking orders from al-Qaida, saying he was planning a solo raid against the Chinese Embassy in Oslo. He said he wanted revenge for Beijing's oppression of Uighurs, a Muslim minority in western China.

Davud, who moved to Norway in 1999 and later became a Norwegian citizen, also said his co-defendants helped him acquire bomb-making ingredients but didn't know he was planning an attack.

Prosecutors said the Norwegian cell first wanted to attack Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten, whose 12 cartoons of Muhammad sparked furious protests in Muslim countries in 2006, and then changed plans to seek to murder one of the cartoonists instead.

Bujak, an Iraqi Kurd, said the paper and the cartoonist were indeed the targets, but described the plans as "just talk."

Prosecutors had to prove the defendants worked together in a conspiracy, because a single individual plotting an attack is not covered under Norway's anti-terror laws.

"There is no doubt that Davud took the initiative to prepare the terror act and that he was the ring leader," the judge said as he delivered the verdict.

He said Davud planned to carry out the attack himself by placing a bomb outside Jyllands-Posten's offices in Aarhus, in western Denmark.

The men had been under surveillance for more than a year when authorities moved to arrest them. Norwegian investigators, who worked with their U.S. counterparts, said the defendants were building a bomb in a basement laboratory in Oslo.

Jakobsen, an Uzbek national who changed his name after moving to Norway, provided some of the chemicals for the bomb, but claims he did not know they were meant for explosives. Jakobsen contacted police and served as an informant, but still faced charges for his involvement before that.

An Associated Press investigation in 2010 showed that authorities learned early on about the alleged cell by intercepting emails from an al-Qaida operative in Pakistan and ? thanks to those early warnings ? were able to secretly replace a key bomb-making ingredient with a harmless liquid when Jakobsen ordered it at an Oslo pharmacy.

The judge said it had been proven that Davud had contacts with al-Qaida in Pakistan, and that his notebook contained references to Saleh al-Somali, al-Qaida's chief of external operations, who officials believe helped organize the New York, Manchester and Norway plots. He was killed in a CIA drone strike in Pakistan in 2009.

During the trial, prosecutors presented testimony obtained in the U.S. in April from three American al-Qaida recruits turned government witnesses.

French government to cut 2012 growth estimate: source (Reuters)

PARIS (Reuters) ? The French government is set to revise down its estimate for 2012 economic growth in an upcoming revision to its budget bill, a government source said on Sunday.

The source told reporters following a televised interview with President Nicolas Sarkozy that the government envisages cuts to spending, rather than further tax rises, to make up for the likely shortfall.

Sarkozy's conservative government has been banking on gross domestic products growth of 1.0 percent this year.

(AP) ? Here we go again.

Four years after what many consider the best finish in Super Bowl history, the Giants and Patriots are facing off once more for the NFL championship. While there are no perfect records on the line this time, this matchup could be equally enticing.

It certainly looks that way heading into Sunday's big game. In 2008, with New England undefeated and having beaten New York in the regular-season finale, the Patriots were 12-point favorites. The spread now is 3, and the Giants beat them during the season.

Both teams are on quite a roll, too. The Patriots (15-3) have won 10 straight ? it was 18 in a row in '08 ? and the Giants (12-7) have five consecutive victories.

All of which matters not a bit, according to Bill Belichick, who will tie a record for head coaches with his fifth Super Bowl appearance.

"I've been asked about that game for several days now. All of the games in the past really don't mean that much at this point," said Belichick, 3-1 in NFL title games. "This game is about this team this year. There aren't really a lot of us coaches and players who were involved in that game, and very few players, in relative terms, between both teams. We are where we are now, and we're different than where we were earlier in the season. The Giants are where they are now, and I think they're different than where they were at different points of the season. To take it back years and years before that, I don't think it has too much bearing on anything."

The loss still reverberates for former Patriots linebacker Rosevelt Colvin.

"It was like getting punched in the stomach," he said. "I still can't watch the highlights from that game because of the opportunity we missed out on was so grand

Having come this far before is immeasurably helpful, according to Justin Tuck, the leader of the Giants' defense whose return to health and form has keyed New York's resurgence. He says the experience of four years ago in the Arizona desert will benefit everyone.

"The only thing that I tell the younger guys is make football football," Tuck said. "Don't make this game bigger than it has to be. Everybody around you is going to make it bigger, but we have to concentrate on why we're going out there. There's going to be a lot of parties. There's going to be a lot of people pulling at your coattail. Listen, if you go out there and you handle your business and you win this game, you can party all you want to after that.

"For me, personally, the first time I went to a Super Bowl I approached it as such ? as a once in a lifetime thing."

For Tuck, it wasn't. And while the defense he leads to Indianapolis isn't quite as overwhelming as the unit that made life miserable for Tom Brady in '08, it has been reinvigorated as the Giants surged to the NFC championship. It also is just as deep as the group that sacked Brady five times, hit him nine more ? Osi Umenyiora claimed he had that many hits alone ? and unnerved the usually unflappable star.

Today, it's Tuck, Umenyiora, All-Pro Jason Pierre-Paul, Dave Tollefson and linebacker Mathias Kiwanuka, who compare favorably with Umenyiora, Tuck, Michael Strahan, Jay Alford and LB Antonio Pierce in 2008.

Other than head coaches Belichick and New York's Tom Coughlin, that is the most common element between the two Super Bowls.

"It's been a strength of their team for as long as I can remember," Brady said. "Michael Strahan, as great of a player as he was, I think we played them in 2003 and they were still harassing the quarterback. It seems like they always have guys who can rush the quarterback. Justin Tuck is as good as they come. Osi week in and week out, he's a player who can ruin a game for an offense. You look at the group they have now, and they have a ton of depth at the defensive line position."

Controversial receivers Randy Moss and Plaxico Burress have been replaced by skilled playmakers like tight ends Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez in New England, wideouts Hakeem Nicks and Victor Cruz in New York. Eli Manning no longer is a question as Giants quarterback, and has carried the offense much the way running backs Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw did in the past.

Lawrence Tynes kicked the Giants into the Super Bowl in overtime in '08 and ? incredibly ? this year, too. Wes Welker led the Patriots with 112 catches that season and had 122 in this one.

Sixteen Giants remain from the 17-14 Super Bowl victory, and only seven Patriots are still around.

Similarities and differences, all juicy elements for Giants-Patriots II.

Here we go again.

Is Obama the Rhetorical Rip-Off Artist Really a Republican? (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | President Barack Obama in his State of the Union address proved himself to be a Republican rhetoric rip-off artist. Obama stole key components of Jon Huntsman's stump speech and recycled one of Rick Perry's key phrases. As if stealing from drop-out candidates wasn't enough, he borrowed from Newt Gingrich, too.

In 2008, when Obama praised Ronald Reagan and the Republicans for having better ideas than Democrats, he was attacked by rivals Hillary Clinton and John Edwards, according to the Associated Press. Obama's borrowing may be emblematic that Obama, elected as a center-left progressive who tacked right after his inauguration, has morphed into a center-right pragmatist who is relatively indistinguishable from his Republican opponents.

Obama talked about "an economy built on American manufacturing," evoking what the Boston Globe called the "central tenet of (Huntsman's) economic platform." He also borrowed the climax of Huntsman's stump speech, his identification of a "Trust Deficit" in America.

The Bangor Daily News reported Huntsman took a hard-line against big banks. He proposed taxing them to raise revenue, according to Time. Channeling his inner-Huntsman, the candidate The Australian claimed Obama most feared, the president vowed to levy a fee on banks as it "will give banks that were rescued by taxpayers a chance to repay a deficit of trust."

Later, Obama said, "I've talked tonight about the deficit of trust between Main Street and Wall Street. But the divide between this city and the rest of the country is at least as bad -- and it seems to get worse every year."

Obama also adopted Huntsman's "nation building here at home" theme. Talking about the military and increasing the V.A.'s budget, Obama said, "it means enlisting our veterans in the work of rebuilding our nation."

He purloined Rick Perry's "all-of-the-above energy policy" phrase Perry used in official speeches, according to his official site, and during his presidential campaign. According to Time, Obama also stole the title of Newt Gingrich's book, "Winning the Future" when he told Congress, "Don't let other countries win the race for the future." The Atlantic reports Obama used the phrase 11 times.

Hearing Obama steal Huntsman's "Trust Deficit" theme was jarring. Obama may just be a hustler on the make, a political magpie ready to steal whatever is shiny. But it may be symptomatic of a deeper existential problem: Barack Obama doesn't know who he is.

Big East, Navy announce Middies getting on board

NEW YORK (AP) ? Navy accepted an invitation to play football in the Big East, starting in 2015.

The service academy has been a football independent since the program began in 1879. The Midshipmen have been thriving over the last decade. They played in eight straight bowl games before slipping to 5-7 this season and have won a record 10 straight games against rival Army.

"While our independent status has served Navy football well to date, Big East conference affiliation will help ensure our future scholar-athletes and athletic programs remain competitive at the highest levels for the foreseeable future," said Vice Admiral Michael Miller, superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy.

Big East Commissioner John Marinatto was to hold a conference call Tuesday afternoon with Miller, athletic director Chet Gladchuk and football coach Ken Niumatalolo.

In December, the Big East added Boise State and San Diego State as football-only members and SMU, Houston and Central Florida in all sports. Those schools will join in 2013.

The Big East is trying to build a 12-team football conference with an eastern and western division and a league championship game. The conference is losing Pittsburgh and Syracuse to the Atlantic Coast Conference and West Virginia to the Big 12, but it's unclear when.

West Virginia filed a lawsuit against the Big East so it can join the Big 12 in 2012. The Big East sued West Virginia to make the school abide by the league's 27-month notification period, which would keep the Mountaineers in the Big East through the 2013-14 school year.

A Rhode Island judge has ordered West Virginia and the Big East to enter nonbinding mediation to resolve their competing lawsuits.

Pitt, Syracuse and the ACC have said they will not challenge the Big East bylaws.

Tenn. vet using Facebook to help lost pets

COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Tenn. (AP) -- A veterinarian in East Tennessee has created a Facebook page to reunite lost pets with their owners.

Andrew Proffitt says he started "Lost and Found Pets of the Tri-Cities" about six months ago. He told the Times-News that the idea came after getting calls from people who found animals and didn't know what to do with them and calls from pet owners who had lost their animals.

Even though the site is only a few months old, Proffitt said it is already expanding. He says he met with the Kingsport and Sullivan County animal shelters this month and they plan to pool resources so that lost pets can be found more easily.

Iowa Recount Lifts Rick Santorum Over Mitt Romney

Final caucus tally puts Santorum 34 votes ahead of Romney, as Perry slated to drop out of presidential race.
By Gil Kaufman

With the South Carolina primary just days away, front-running Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney is suddenly looking for his second win in a row rather than a record third. Though the former Massachusetts governor appeared to eke out a slim eight-point win at the Iowa caucus on January 3, the Des Moines Register reported that the final count of the vote puts former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum ahead by 34 votes.

After a long night of vote counting and nail-biting, Romney appeared to post the slimmest-ever margin of victory in Iowa, but the Register revealed that missing data from eight precincts may never be certified or recovered. GOP officials discovered inaccuracies in 131 precincts, not all of which affected the final vote.

In the end, though, the certified number points to an asterisks-bearing win for Santorum, who won 29,839 votes to Romney's 29,805. In essence, state GOP officials said, the Iowa results come down to a "split decision."

"The results from Iowa caucus night revealed a virtual tie," Romney said after the news broke. "I would like to thank the Iowa Republican Party for their careful attention to the caucus process, and we once again recognize Rick Santorum for his strong performance in the state. ... The Iowa caucuses, with record turnout, were a great start to defeating President Obama in Iowa and elsewhere in the general election."

Iowa was close, but Romney put up a decisive victory in New Hampshire, getting 36 percent of the vote while Santorum wound up in fifth place with around 10 percent.

Though the belated Iowa victory doesn't have the same kick it might have for Santorum had he sealed the deal on the night of the caucus, it does deprive Romney of bragging rights over two victories in a row and could sway primary voters in South Carolina (on Saturday) and Florida (on January 31). Santorum and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich have been battling it out to capture the crucial Evangelical Christian vote in those two states and the after-the-fact win may give Santorum an advantage.

Another possible edge could come from CNN's report Thursday morning (January 19) that Texas governor Rick Perry is slated to suspend his campaign. Perry was touted as a strong contender for the GOP nomination when he entered the race last year, but a series of disastrous debate performances prevented him from climbing out of the single digits in polls.

Obama administration to deny Keystone XL oil pipeline permit

The Obama administration has decided that it will not issue a permit before Feb. 21 for the controversial Keystone XL oil pipeline from Canada, according to people with knowledge of the decision.

The announcement, which could come as early as Wednesday, comes in response to a 60-day deadline Congress imposed in late December on the decision-making process for the permit as part of a deal to extend a payroll-tax break and unemployment benefits for two months. ?

Today?s decision, expected from the State Department, would make official what the administration has said from the outset: that under current law, it cannot accelerate the permitting process, especially in light of the need for additional environmental reviews of a new path for the pipeline through Nebraska.

Nebraska hasn't identified possible alternate routes that would allow the pipeline to circumvent a key aquifer.

"It's a fallacy to suggest that the president should sign into law something when there isn't even an alternate route identified in Nebraska and when the review process is" not yet done, White House spokesman Jay Carney said?Tuesday. "There was an attempt to short-circuit the review process in a way that does not allow the kind of careful consideration of all the competing criteria here that needs to be done."

It's unclear whether the administration will reject the pipeline project outright or will revert to the longer time line that it announced in November, which calls for a final decision to be made in early 2013, the people familiar with the decision said.

The decision is sure to intensify a bitter political fight over the pipeline. Republicans believe they can further damage President Obama?s shaky standing in the polls by arguing that his refusal to approve Keystone XL robs Americans of thousands of construction jobs.

?President Obama is about to destroy tens of thousands of American jobs and sell American energy security to the Chinese,? said Brendan Buck, a spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner. ?The president won?t stand up to his political base even to create American jobs. This is not the end of this fight.?

The petroleum industry asserts that the Keystone XL project would create at least 20,000 jobs, but the State Department and independent groups estimate that no more than 6,000 jobs would be generated.

Environmentalists have pushed the administration to turn down the permit, arguing that the transportation of petroleum from Canada?s oil sands would profoundly damage the environment. They also contend that much of the gasoline and other products refined from the Canadian oil would be exported, doing little for American energy security.

A denial of the permit now would not prevent the State?Department?from considering the application in the future.?But the department can't do that until the application is complete, one administration official said, suggesting the permitting process could stretch out for months, possibly into?next year.?

"You can't permit what doesn't exist," the administration official said.

In a new report, Obama's jobs council urges him to expedite the production of fossil fuels close to home, in part by "allowing more access to oil, gas and coal opportunities on federal lands."

Obama has said that a shift away from dependence on foreign oil is a priority, without suggesting how that stance would affect the Keystone project.

Jon Huntsman set to drop out, back Romney. Will it make a difference?

Given the nature of Republican primary voting, moderate GOP candidate Jon Huntsman was a long shot from the beginning. He's set to endorse Mitt Romney, although it's unclear how much difference that will make in a race for the nomination that already favors Romney.

And then there were five.?Jon Huntsman?s withdrawal from the 2012 presidential race, announced Sunday, reduces the number of GOP hopefuls.?But it?s unlikely to hasten the eventual selection of the Republican nominee, and it?s unclear who will be helped most by the former Utah governor?s move ? even though he?s endorsing Mitt Romney.

The fact is, Huntsman?s candidacy has been a very long shot from the beginning, and his poll numbers had him at the back of the pack all along ? no more than 4 percent, and usually half that if not less. His third-place finish in the New Hampshire primary (behind Romney and libertarian Ron Paul) ? the state where he?d focused most of his campaign effort ? had to have been a disappointment.

Given the more-conservative hue of Republican primary voters in the upcoming South Carolina primary Saturday, Huntsman?s prospects for a comeback were all but nil.

Election 101: Ten facts about Jon Huntsman and his presidential campaign

Unlike Michele Bachmann, who bailed out the day after coming in sixth in the Iowa caucuses (Huntsman was seventh), Huntsman never had his moment in the sun. Rick Perry and Newt Gingrich rose and fell, Herman Cain was forced out by questions about his character, and Rick Santorum has had a bit of a surge lately as the latest anti-Romney favored by evangelical Christians and other social conservatives. It was a phenomenon in the 2012 presidential race that Huntsman never enjoyed.

He is a highly-respected moderate Republican with an impressive political background, a manner that is pleasant (with some awkward moments when he tries to be funny or hip), and a wealthy family background that allowed him to start his campaign with $2 million of his own money and a billionaire father who was the chief funder of a super PAC created to help Huntsman?s presidential effort. Like Romney, he?s a Mormon, although apparently more relaxed about it at a time when the church still is viewed as suspect by a significant percentage of self-identified conservative Christians.

His record as governor was (or at least should have been) a strong asset. His other major political position ? US Ambassador to China ? certainly indicated a high level of experience in foreign affairs and trade, something generally lacking among his rivals ? except that he served overseas under the president he hoped to unseat.

Although he could be critical of his opponents on issues, Huntsman emphasized ?civility, humanity and respect? in his campaign ? even going out of his way to note that President Obama loved the United States just as much as he does. That was not necessarily the attitude displayed by party activists during the primary election season ? certainly not by conservative talk show hosts for whom ridicule and derision is a primary means of political discourse.

Ironically, news of Huntsman?s withdrawal came on the same day The State, South Carolina's largest newspaper, endorsed him for president. The endorsement said there were "two sensible, experienced grownups in the race," referring to Romney and Huntsman. But it said Huntsman "is more principled, has a far more impressive resume, and offers a significantly more important message."

Although Huntsman was scheduled to make his announcement ? including the Romney endorsement ? Sunday morning, campaign officials told several news sources Saturday that the decision had been made.

?The governor and his family, at this point in the race, decided it was time for Republicans to rally around a candidate who could beat Barack Obama and turn around the economy,? campaign manager Matt David told the New York Times. ?That candidate is Gov. Mitt Romney.?

SEC Inspector General Kotz leaving agency (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? David Kotz, the tough internal watchdog at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, is leaving the agency at the end of January, the SEC said on Tuesday.

Kotz, 45, joined the SEC in December 2007 after previously working as the inspector general of the Peace Corps.

He has made a name for himself as a prolific inspector general at the SEC, investigating everything from leasing and contracting to insider-trading and even pornography-watching by agency employees.

He has also faced some criticism from SEC employees who have complained his tactics have led to a culture of fear at the agency.

He plans to join Gryphon Strategies, a private investigative services firm where he will serve as a managing director in its Washington office. He will focus on conducting corporate fraud investigations and helping whistleblowers seeking to expose fraud, the SEC said.

"I am tremendously proud of the accomplishments of my office and the agency over the past four years," Kotz said in a statement. "The reports we have issued have not only been significant to the agency, Congress and the investing public, but they have also directly resulted in a transformation of many of the divisions and offices of the commission."

Kotz's aggressiveness has won him some fans, particularly in Congress. His exhaustive 477-page report on the agency's failure to catch convicted Ponzi swindler Bernard Madoff prodded the SEC to be more assertive in implementing a new database to help track tips from informants.

Most recently, one of Kotz's past investigations helped lead the Justice Department to reach a civil settlement with a former SEC attorney over claims he improperly represented alleged Ponzi schemer Allen Stanford after departing the SEC. [ID:nL1E8CD9DB]

Kotz's successes have recently been shaded by growing concerns about his tactics.

In December, Reuters reported that at least two SEC employees had filed formal complaints against Kotz alleging he bullies witnesses and twists facts to build a case against them.

In addition, several recent articles by Bloomberg have raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest after Kotz did a sit-down interview with a financial adviser who later sold Kotz three tickets to a sold-out football game.

American art takes the stage at the Louvre (AP)

PARIS ? American tourists fill the galleries of the Louvre Museum, yet American art is surprisingly scarce.

Paris' premier museum and three U.S. art institutions are seeking to change that with an exhibit tracing the birth of American landscape painting and its influences.

"As soon as I arrived at the Louvre, I noticed that American art was not displayed at the level it merits," said Louvre director Henri Loyrette.

Even the exhibit's English-French melange of a name breaks tradition: It's called "New Frontier: l'art americain entre au Louvre," or "American Art Enters the Louvre."

It focuses on Thomas Cole, a pioneer of the Hudson River School of American landscape painters of the 19th century.

Cole's "The Cross in Solitude," from 1845 and in the Louvre collection, is joined by other loaned works including "The Last of the Mohicans" and work of his disciples.

The other partners in the exhibit are Atlanta's High Museum of Art, the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Arkansas, and Chicago's Terra Foundation for American Art.

Curator Guillaume Faroult described how Cole and fellow painter Asher Durand drew inspiration from a 19th century visit to the Louvre, home of centuries of artwork by European and other masters. The exhibit includes paintings that influenced Cole's work.

The show includes conferences and projects aimed at improving the French public's knowledge of early American art. The exhibit, which opened Saturday, runs through April 16.

Android Central staff's best of CES 2012 picks

Android Central

Another CES has come and gone, and like the past couple of years there was a common trend -- Android was everywhere.  Our fellas on the floor in Vegas had their work cut out for them, and did a heck of a job covering the best of it all.  While they wind down (and get ready for MWC in Barcelona next month) the rest of us wanted to take a minute and talk about our favorites from CES 2012.  Hit the break, see what we liked the most, and discuss.

(AP) ? Johnson Mncube remembers the first day at Oprah Winfrey's boarding school for underprivileged South African girls, when 11- and 12-year-olds were crying at the thought of being separated from their families, and he said he almost wanted to put his own daughter in his pocket and take her home.

Five years later, Mncube was joyful she stayed. On Saturday, he gazed proudly at his daughter, dressed elegantly in white for the first graduation ceremony at Winfrey's school. Bongekile Mncube is headed to the University of Johannesburg to study politics and economics, and vows to one day help "build the economy of this country."

"We are so thankful to Oprah," said her father, a pastor and small businessmen who never went to high school. "We pray that God helps her to fulfill the vision that she had."

Elgar's "Pomp and circumstance" rang out Saturday as the graduates marched in, some unsteady on new high heels. The ceremony saw cheers and tears, including Winfrey's own.

Winfrey's school is an attempt to wield philanthropy and celebrity against South Africa's social and educational crises. High-achieving students from poor families were admitted after a rigorous application process in which Winfrey was deeply involved, and she has visited regularly to counsel her girls. She held a last, late-night "pajama party" with the graduates Friday.

Winfrey told reporters after the ceremony that her girls would continue to be able to rely on her support. A counseling unit had been set up to help the graduates budget time, money and priorities in university.

In a graduation speech, Winfrey praised the teachers, administrators, social workers, psychologists and family members she said had ensured the students succeeded. Winfrey said she has learned it takes a team to support students, especially those who have experienced the poverty and personal trauma that define so many South African lives.

Winfrey said she sees the students as her daughters, and listed the blows they have experienced: "Divorce. Violence. Molestation. The loss of one parent. The loss of another parent. Sorrow. Sadness. Grief."

The first class to graduate from the school overcame adversity to see 72 of the 75 original members graduate. All 72 are headed to universities in South Africa and the United States. Across South Africa, more than half a million members of the class of 2011 disappeared before the 496,000 remaining took their final exams, and only a quarter of those who graduated did well enough to qualify for university study, according to government figures.

"I'm one proud momma today," said Winfrey, who wore eye shadow and a flowing gown in green, a school color.

Quoting Maya Angelou, she called the graduates "phenomenal, phenomenal, phenomenal women."

Graca Machel, whose husband former South African President Nelson Mandela inspired Winfrey to open the school, called on the graduates to change the world. Mandela has retired from public life and did not attend the ceremony. He attended the opening of the school in 2007.

"You are leaders," Machel said in her graduation speech. "But be humble. Listen. Learn. Try, and try again."

Winfrey, among the wealthiest women in the world, spent $40 million to build the school, giving it facilities many South African universities might envy. But she said the school's success was owed to teachers who came early and stayed late, social workers like one who traveled hundreds of miles (kilometers) to rescue a student who had encountered violence during a visit home, and parents who instilled discipline despite difficult home lives.

Winfrey asked staff and family members to stand for applause during the ceremony.

Winfrey encouraged all South African schools to raise their expectations, saying the experience of her school showed young people would respond by excelling. From the start, Winfrey's students were told they should set their sights on university.

Despite the money and intentions, the school has had trouble. Soon after opening, a woman working as a dormitory matron was accused of abusing students. She was acquitted in 2010. Winfrey, who has spoken of being abused as a child and called the allegations against the matron crushing, and has said the trial's outcome was "profoundly" disappointing.

Winfrey settled a defamation lawsuit filed in Philadelphia by the school's former headmistress, Nomvuyo Mzamane, who claimed Winfrey defamed her in remarks made in the wake of the scandal.

Last year, a baby born to a student at the school was found dead.

Winfrey said Saturday there were times when she was discouraged, but that "I always held the vision that this day was possible."

Winfrey noted the gradates were born in 1994, the year apartheid ended, "into a nation that said: You are free. You are free to rise. You are free to soar."

Graduate Bongekile Mncube took Winfrey's words to heart.

"The world should watch out," she said. "We're about to take over."

Behind the scenes with live ESPN 3D boxing at CES 2012

ESPN had a presence at this CES like no other we've witnessed from the sports network and the last of the four letter network's big events was Top Rank Boxing live from the show floor. The event drew quite a crowd and the 3D quality didn't disappoint. The crew was using a Sony HDC-P1 camera system with 3D rigs by the Pace Cameron Group all sent through a Sony MVX-8000x production switcher. If you didn't catch it live on ESPN 3D, we're sure there will be plenty of opportunities to catch the 3D reruns.

Atrial arrhythmias detected by pacemakers increase risk of stroke

ScienceDaily (Jan. 11, 2012) ? An irregular heartbeat that you don't even feel but can be picked up by a pacemaker is associated with a significantly increased risk of stroke, says a new McMaster University study.

The report, recently published in the New England Journal of Medicine, says that of nearly 2,600 patients without a history of atrial fibrillation but with a recently implanted pacemaker, more than one-third had episodes when the heartbeat would become rapid and irregular for more than six minutes.

In 85 per cent of these patients, the irregular heartbeat did not cause any symptoms and was only detected by the modern pacemakers. Those who had one of these asymptomatic atrial arrhythmias in the first three months had more than twice the risk of stroke or embolism compared to others.

The international research team based at the Population Health Research Institute was led by Dr. Jeff Healey, an associate professor of medicine of the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine at McMaster.

"This study suggests that silent atrial fibrillation is very common and may be the cause of many strokes that previously could not be explained. In all, atrial fibrillation may be responsible for nearly 1 in 5 strokes," said Healey. "This is an important observation as we have very effective and specific therapies to prevent stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation, once this heart rhythm disturbance is identified."

The Asymptomatic Stroke and Atrial Fibrillation Evaluation in Pacemaker Patients Trial (ASSERT) was a prospective cohort study conducted in 23 countries with 136 centres, to explore the relationship between device-detected atrial arrhythmias and stroke. The study participants were 65 years old or older, with a history of hypertension but no history of atrial fibrillation. They were followed for approximately 2.5 years.

The study was sponsored by St. Jude's Medical Inc.

Jets hire Tony Sparano as offensive coordinator (AP)

NEW YORK ? The future of Mark Sanchez and the Jets' offense is now in Tony Sparano's hands.

The Jets hired the former Miami Dolphins coach as their offensive coordinator Wednesday to replace Brian Schottenheimer and take over an offense that struggled mightily this season as New York failed to make the playoffs.

"When we sat down with Tony, I knew that he was the right person at the right time for our offense," coach Rex Ryan said in a statement. "I've admired his work as a competitor in the division for the past three seasons. His teams were always physical, tough and hard-nosed."

The team announced the hiring just over 12 hours after announcing that Schottenheimer told the Jets he wouldn't return next season despite having two years left on his contract. Schottenheimer, the son of former NFL coach Marty Schottenheimer, was highly criticized for the Jets' inconsistencies as they ranked 25th overall in offense. He also took a lot of the blame for Sanchez not progressing as expected in his third year.

The 50-year-old Sparano now will try to get the franchise quarterback back on track, and he could get some help doing so. A few reports said former Kansas City coach Todd Haley, known for his work with developing passing games, was interviewing with the Jets for a position on Ryan's staff.

"I'm very proud to be part of such an outstanding organization and to have an opportunity to work with these players," Sparano said. "I know this division very well and I'm looking forward to that challenge."

There will be a few new faces working under Ryan next season, including Sparano. Offensive line coach Bill Callahan and wide receivers coach Henry Ellard are also both not expected back.

This will be the first NFL offensive coordinator job for Sparano, but he did call plays for Dallas during the 2006 season. He is a strong proponent of a run-first approach, something Ryan prefers ? "Ground-and-Pound" ? and the type of system Sanchez thrived in during his first two seasons with the Jets.

Sparano was fired by the Dolphins last month after going 29-32 in three-plus seasons. He also has worked as an assistant in Cleveland, Washington and Jacksonville.

The 38-year-old Schottenheimer said in a statement late Tuesday night that he was "very proud of what we have accomplished" during his six seasons with the Jets, and thanked Ryan and the organization. Despite the team's 8-8 record, Ryan and general manager Mike Tannenbaum said last week they expected Schottenheimer back unless he got a head coaching job.

Despite the votes of confidence, the perception from fans and media was Schottenheimer was on his way out. He interviewed for Jacksonville's job, which went to Mike Mularkey on Tuesday night ? and then the Jets announced they and Schottenheimer had parted ways.

The move came despite Schottenheimer having two years and about $3.2 million remaining on his contract after quietly receiving an extension in the offseason.

Things seemed to come to a head for Schottenheimer in Week 16 as the offense struggled in a 29-14 loss to the Giants. Sanchez threw 59 times, something that had even the players scratching their heads.

In the season finale at Miami, wide receiver Santonio Holmes argued in the huddle, leading Schottenheimer to bench the playmaker ? even while New York was trying to get back in what became a 19-17 loss.

The Jets even brought in Tom Moore, the former Indianapolis Colts offensive guru, as a consultant in training camp to assist Schottenheimer. Some viewed that as a clear indicator that the team was not thrilled with the offensive coordinator. Schottenheimer said he was happy to have Moore's experience to lean on, and Ryan said Moore's presence was in no way a result of a lack of confidence in Schottenheimer.

It's uncertain whether Moore will remain with the Jets next season, but it's clear Sparano will have plenty of work to do with the offense.

He'll have to evaluate Sanchez in his system and likely bring in a backup who could push him if he struggles. The Jets also must address their offensive line, which was shaky for good chunks of the season and decide whether they want to bring back veterans such as wide receiver Plaxico Burress and running back LaDainian Tomlinson, who is contemplating retirement.

Ford recalls 450,000 minivans, SUVs for defects (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Ford Motor Co recalled about 450,000 SUVs and minivans in the United States due to potential flaws that could trigger brake fluid leaks or a loss of power, U.S. safety regulators said on Wednesday.

The No. 2 U.S. automaker said the recall affects nearly 245,000 Ford Escape SUVs built for the 2001 and 2002 model years. Ford also recalled about 206,000 Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey minivans for 2004 and 2005 model years.

The SUVs were outfitted with a brake master cylinder reservoir cap that could leak brake fluid. If that happens, it could harm some of the wiring in the antilock brake system.

Corrosion of the wiring harness connector could lead to melting, smoke or a fire, according to a posting on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Web site.

Ford told regulators it recalled the minivans because of a defective torque converter. If those parts malfunction, the vehicle will lose "motive" power without warning.

When a vehicle loses motive power, it can still be steered and stopped because the engine continues to run, Ford said. But the condition increases the risk of a crash.

PARTS SHORTAGES AFFECT SUV RECALL

Dealers will replace the cap, and the braking system in the Escape SUVs will be modified. But Ford said there was a parts shortage that could delay the remedy for the SUVs.

"If parts are not available, Ford will instruct owners to park their vehicles outside until such time as parts become available," Ford said in the NHTSA post.

Ford issued a recall in April 2007 to repair missing or misplaced seals in the wireless harness connector. Some of the vehicles repaired in that recall may not have received a complete inspection or the proper fix at that time, Ford told regulators, according to Wednesday's post.

Mitt guns for Bush, McCain money (Politico)

Mitt Romney drew a crowd of about 150 supporters and fundraisers to a strategy meeting Wednesday morning in Boston as part of an effort to win over Republican mega-donor holdouts.

Romney?s camp hopes to secure dozens of bundlers and contributors who came out for George W. Bush and John McCain, but who are still on the sidelines this time around. The campaign is also wooing veteran fundraising operatives who committed early to rivals Texas Gov. Rick Perry and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

At the finance event Wednesday, Rich Beeson, Romney?s political director, and Spencer Wick, Romney?s national finance director, addressed the crowd on the campaign?s plans.

The meeting was an ?opportunity to bring everybody together to talk to the governor and finance committee and how going forward, this could be a long process,? a Romney supporter and fundraiser told POLITICO.

In large part, Romney boosters are targeting bundlers for McCain and Bush because they are the remaining untapped sources of big campaign cash ? critical gets for Romney as he tightens his grip on the Republican nomination.

?Well of course. It?s no secret that we need to get every penny we can. That has to start with new donors,? one person at the meeting said. ?A good place to find them are from McCain and Bush worlds.?

Nearly half of the 46 GOP mega-fundraisers had not committed as of late 2011 to fundraising for a presidential candidate, according to an iWatch News report. Campaigns aggressively seek bundlers because they not only contribute tens of thousands of dollars of their own money, but they corral members of their big-donor network to write checks.

Romney?s finance team is looking to get as much money in the door before they begin raising money for the general election. The campaign announced Wednesday that they raised $24 million for the fourth quarter. It has $19 million cash on hand.

David Beightol of Dutko Grayling said that he has heard discussions that the Romney camp is ?excited to reach McCain supporters.? Beightol, who is a member of Romney?s finance committee, was not present at the meeting Wednesday morning.

Netflix app hits PlayStation 3s in the UK, service still coming 'soon'

Netflix still isn't offering a firm date for its launch in the UK, but it looks like some of the final pieces are starting to fall into place. The company's PlayStation 3 app is now hitting consoles across the pond, displaying the message you see above when it's launched. Unfortunately, that's about all we have to go on at the moment, but PS3 users can now at least rest assured that they won't have any waiting to do when Netflix does finally flip the switch -- one more shot after the break.

[Thanks, Fabio]
