UNESCO decision on Bethlehem church angers Israel

The Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem is built on the site where Christians believe Jesus was born.

UNESCO ? the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation has approved a Palestinian bid to place the church on its list of World Heritage Sites.

The move has prompted accusations from the USA and Israel the decision is political which Palestinians reject.

?We believe that this is a first step towards the protection of this vast and rich heritage in Palestine ? cultural, human, religious heritage, of which we are guardians, and we hope to be able to use this in order to exercise our right to defend our culture, our history, our identity,? explained Hanan Ashrawi who is a member of the Executive Committee of the Organisation for the Liberation of Paletine.

The church will be entitled to UN protection and funding, though experts who prepared a report for the bid said the site was not in imminent danger of destruction.

Israel has questioned the need for it to be registered as an endangered site and see Palestinian moves at UNESCO which granted them full membership last year as an attempt to embarrass Israel on the world stage.

(AP) ? Government troops rained tank and artillery shells down on a rebellious suburb of the Syrian capital of Damascus Friday, killing at least 43 people over two days, opposition groups and activists said.

The barrage is part of a fierce government offensive aimed at regaining control of parts of Damascus suburbs where rebels operate, particularly Douma, a sprawling suburb that has been a hotbed of dissent against President Bashar Assad's regime.

A local activist who spoke on condition of anonymity for security reasons said the shelling was "relentless" throughout Thursday, and exploding shells killed people in their homes.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 41 people died in all-day shelling of Douma Thursday, including three children and five members of a single family. At least two more were killed Friday morning.

"They (government troops) are trying to bring Douma under control, but they are being met by fierce resistance," said Rami Abdul-Rahman, the group's director. He said most of the dead were civilians.

The Local Coordination Committees network said 59 people were killed in Thursday's shelling of Damascus suburbs, most of them in Douma. The difference in tolls illustrated the difficulty of verifying information coming out of tightly controlled Syria, where journalists and human rights groups are either banned or severely restricted.

Amateur videos posted by activists online showed bloodied bodies lying on blankets in a room and others shrouded in white sheets and placed on stretchers. "A new massacre by Bashar Assad," cried a man holding a dead girl in a pink blouse, a large gash on her face.

The violence around the capital's suburbs mirrored fighting across many parts of Syria that killed dozens of other people Thursday, according to the groups.

Activists say more than 14,000 people have been killed since the uprising began in March 2011.

Much of the violence that has gripped Syria has been sanctioned by the government to crush dissent. But rebel fighters are launching increasingly deadly attacks on regime targets, and several huge suicide bombings this year suggest al-Qaida or other extremists are joining the battle. A bomb blast rocked central Damascus on Thursday near a busy market and the country's main justice complex, wounding at least three people and sending a cloud of black smoke into the air.

The latest carnage came as world powers show new urgency to resolve the crisis, which so far has resisted international efforts.

World powers will meet Saturday in Geneva for talks on Syria, but few observers expect a breakthrough. Syria has the protection of Russia, a veto-wielding member of the U.N. Security Council, and has so far been impervious to international pressure.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Moscow will not endorse a call on Assad to give up power.

"We are not supporting and will not support any external meddling," he said. "External players must not dictate ... to Syrians, but, first of all, must commit to influencing all the sides in Syria to stop the violence."

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said Thursday it was "very clear" that all the participants at the Geneva meeting ? including Russia ? are on board with a transition plan created by international envoy Kofi Annan. His plan calls for the formation of a national unity government that would oversee the drafting of a new constitution and elections.

Clinton told reporters that the invitations to Saturday's meeting in Geneva made clear that representatives "were coming on the basis of (Annan's) transition plan."

Lavrov said it was "obvious that a transitional period is needed to overcome the Syrian crisis," but insisted the major powers in Geneva must focus on convincing the opposition groups to soften their demands.

Diplomatic hopes have rested on Russia to agree to a plan that would end the Assad family dynasty, which has ruled Syria for more than four decades. Russia is Syria's most important ally, protector and supplier of arms.

There are few options besides keeping up diplomatic pressure, as an international military intervention is all but ruled out in the near future. Few countries are willing to get deeply involved in such an explosive conflict, and Russia and China have pledged to veto any international attempt to intervene militarily.

Tim Murphy, R-Pa., center, holds up a copy of the Supreme Court's health care ruling during a news conference by the GOP Doctors Caucus on Capitol Hill in Washington. (AP) ? Republicans in at least four states want to abandon an expansion of Medicaid in President Barack Obama's health care overhaul, and more than a dozen other states are considering it in the wake of the Supreme Court decision removing the threat of federal penalties.

The high court upheld most of Obama's law, but the justices said the federal government could not take away states' existing federal Medicaid dollars if they refused to widen eligibility to include adults who are only slightly above the poverty line. Some Republican governors and lawmakers quickly declared that they would not carry out the expansion.

The states considering whether to withdraw from the expansion include presidential battlegrounds Florida, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Colorado.

"One thing is clear, state legislatures will play a big role in the future of Obamacare," said Republican state Rep. Todd Richardson of Missouri.

For elected officials, the high court decision presented a stark choice: agree to accept an ambitious expansion of Medicaid or leave behind a vast pile of federal money that could provide health care to millions of poor constituents.

The law signed by Obama in 2010 was projected to provide coverage to more than 30 million Americans, reducing by more than half the number of uninsured people. Of those, about 17 million were supposed to be added to Medicaid, the joint federal and state health care program for the poor. The rest were to be covered by a strengthened and subsidized private insurance market.

The federal government agreed to pay the full tab for the Medicaid expansion when it begins in 2014. But after three years, states must pay a gradually increasing share that tops out at 10 percent of the cost. That may not sound like much, but it translates to a commitment of billions of dollars at a time when many local officials are still anxious about the slow economic recovery.

In Texas alone, where one quarter of the population is uninsured, the Medicaid expansion is projected to provide coverage to 2 million people in the first two years alone. Over a decade, the Texas Health and Human Services Commission estimates the expansion would cost the state an estimated $27 billion. Lawmakers will weigh their options when they return to work in 2013.

But other states aren't waiting to announce their intentions.

Mississippi, which is one of the poorest states in the nation and has more than 640,000 people on Medicaid, could cover an additional 400,000 people if it chose to expand Medicaid. But doing so would cost about $1.7 billion over 10 years and force deep cuts to education and transportation, state officials said.

"Mississippi taxpayers simply cannot afford that cost, so our state is not inclined to drastically expand Medicaid," Republican Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves said.

Republican Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman promised to block any effort to expand Medicaid, which he said would require tax increases or education cuts. And Indiana Senate President Pro Tem David Long, also a Republican, asserted that his state "will certainly" opt out of the Medicaid expansion.

The expansion was also quickly nixed by GOP legislative leaders in Missouri, where 255,000 of the state's roughly 835,000 uninsured residents stood to be added to the program. In 2005, Missouri slashed its Medicaid eligibility for parents to the lowest levels allowed by the federal government in order to help balance the budget. The expansion in Obama's health care law would restore coverage to those people and add many more. The cost: $2 billion annually, of which Missouri would pay about $100 million beginning in 2017, with its share rising above $150 million by 2019.

"The federal government always does this ? they put something out there that looks good on the front end, but on the back end the states have to figure out how to pay for this," said Missouri House Majority Leader Tim Jones, a Republican. "In this current economic time, we're not going to consider going down that path."

In states that reject the Medicaid expansion, some lower-income residents who work could find themselves in a coverage gap between the extremely poor and the middle class. The health care law offers tax breaks to offset the cost of private insurance purchased through new online marketplaces for those whose incomes are above the poverty level. But there are no breaks for many others who earn below the poverty level but still aren't considered poor enough to receive Medicaid. The law assumed they would be covered by an expanded Medicaid program.

Bunnie Gronborg, 64, of Festus, Mo., said she has two sons in their 30s who are single fathers who lost construction jobs and now lack health insurance. She had hoped they could be covered by the Medicaid expansion, and she doesn't buy the explanation that the state cannot afford it.

"There's absolutely no reason" to reject the expansion, "except being vindictive and playing political games with people's actual health care," Gronborg said.

Some states have already expanded Medicaid eligibility beyond the standard set in the federal health care law. Others are forging ahead with plans to do so after the Supreme Court ruling.

Minnesota, for example, has already begun drawing more federal money to expand its Medicaid program ahead of schedule. Officials in Connecticut, Iowa, Arkansas and elsewhere said they will move forward with plans to raise their Medicaid income eligibility thresholds, citing the chance to cover hundreds of thousands of additional people with the lion's share of the cost coming for the federal government.

In New Mexico, Republican Gov. Susana Martinez has supported increased state money for Medicaid since taking office last year, though she hasn't decided whether to back the federal expansion to 133 percent of the federal poverty level ? an amount equivalent to $14,856 annually for an individual or $30,657 for a family of four. The expansion would add 170,000 people to the state's Medicaid rolls, reducing the number of uninsured New Mexico residents by almost 40 percent.

"I think New Mexico would be foolish not to expand its Medicaid program," said state Sen. Dede Feldman, a Democrat, who is chairwoman of a legislative study committee that deals with health care.

Despite the reluctance of some state officials to embrace the Medicaid expansion, history suggests that the federal government's financial carrot can be a powerful incentive. When the federal government offered enhanced payments to expand health coverage for children in the 1990s, all states eventually implemented the program, said Jennifer Tolbert, director of state health reform at the Kaiser Family Foundation, a nonpartisan informational clearinghouse.

Now states have an even higher-stakes offer to expand coverage for adults.

Even in Florida, which took a leading role in fighting the health care overhaul, officials have not ruled out participating, although Gov. Rick Scott said it is unlikely. Other states are biding their time, too.

"The federal government is putting a lot of money on the table," Tolbert said. "It may be difficult for states to walk away from that money while simultaneously leaving their lowest income residents uninsured."

Why You Should Consider Acupuncture As Part of Your Pain Relief ...

Acupuncture is a great option for better health, regardless of if you are having to deal with a cold to an injury, stress to a medical condition. Acupuncture is great for boosting your immunity also, so even though you are feeling ?fine?, acupuncture can work behind the scenes to keep your body in top shape. Acupuncture involves using sterile needles, and inserting them into the skin at specific points along energy channels that run through your body. For those who deal with migraines or headaches, acupuncture is used in place of over-the-counter medications, as it stimulates the ?aspirin? hormone to relieve tension caused from headaches. Those who have sleepless nights also find that acupuncture helps to calm the body (also known as a relaxation response), helping them to achieve a good night?s sleep. In many low back conditions, acupuncture has been proven as being more effective than most pain remedies. Our Acupuncturist even treats cancer patients, as acupuncture may be used as a complementary therapy with traditional cancer treatments.Acupuncture has been used for over 3000 years throughout Asia, and has been becoming more widely used across the western hemisphere as an increasing number of people learn how it is just as, if not more, effective than many medications being prescribed. We encourage you to speak with our Acupuncturist so you can learn more about how acupuncture can treat any condition, pain, or issue you may be handling. He has been treating a wide variety of people for over 14 years with a very high success rate. Please contact us today to learn more!

Google I/O 2012 Day 1 Keynote Liveblog!

Google I/O 2012

Here we go, ladies and gentlemen! We're up and ready and raring to go at Moscone West in San Francisco. We've got the Google I/O Day 1 keynote address coming your way, after the break.

This one's going to be a little different, though. Unlike a lot of keynotes, Google's streaming this one live, and you can watch it with us after the break. (Might even be able to see the back of our heads.) That also means we don't have to set our keyboards on fire trying to type every little word, which is nice. That also means we'll have more time free to let you know what's really going on, behind the scenes and between the lines.

So break on through to the other side, and let's kick off this crazy ride. The keynote begins June 27 at the following times:

  • 9:30 a.m. Pacific time
  • 12:30 p.m. Eastern time

Cafe House Braun Kf 560

This coffee maker is easy to use; it has a one-of-a-kind open anti-slip handle so that pouring your coffee from pot to mug would be smooth and convenient.

This model has a filter release button that allows the filter basket to release itself for easy insertion of coffee filter and also for easy filling of ground coffee.

This model is ideal for use in Europe and Asia since the power cords are of European/Asian Style and the voltage is 220/240 50Hz. Its price of less than a hundred dollars make it a true bargain for its quality.

What?s good about Braun Kf560 Coffee Maker:

  • This coffeemaker is inexpensive
  • The Braun PureAqua really helps in improving coffee taste by reducing chlorine
  • Can make big batches of coffee quickly (up to 10 cups)
  • Easy and convenient to use
  • Very functional yet simple
  • Great tasting coffee in every pot
  • Like all classic Braun coffee makers, the Kf560 has a sleek design that looks elegant and attractive on any countertop
  • Coffee always comes out very hot
  • Has an adjustable shut-off warming plate that keeps its temperature up to four house after brewing
  • The gold filter helps to improve the taste whilst eliminating the need for paper filters

Other features of Braun Cafe House include:

  • Drip stop when removing the jug
  • Take-out filter basket
  • Large, visible pilot light
  • Pivoting filter basket with overflow protection
  • Easy cleaning
  • Dishwasher-safe carafe and lid
  • Water level indicator
  • Integrated cord storage

Kf560 Things to Consider:

  • If you want a strong pot of coffee, it would be best that you brew 10 cups of coffee to get desired flavor
  • Pause and serve function have been reported to have leaking issues
  • Serving is not made to be a pour and go; one needs to be careful in pouring the coffee or else it may spill
  • Doesn?t have a function/setting that allows you to adjust your coffee?s brewing strength

Summary:

Coffee Maker Kf560 has received some mixed reviews regarding function; but when it comes to the quality of the coffee, there is no question that this coffee maker gives you what you paid for. Of course, one must take into consideration that this has 220 voltage; do not buy it if you are in the Unites States or anywhere that has 110 volts; because obviously this would not work.

But voltage aside, coffee lovers swear by the taste of Braun brewed coffee. Aside from the quality of the coffee, the quality of the water that you use determines the actual taste. The Braun PureAqua filter makes regular tap water taste great and it reduces cost because you need not purchase paper filters or filtered water. Its functions are very simple, easy to use and easy to learn to use. It may lack certain settings such as coffee strength adjustment, but it is a very minor gripe.

Aside from the flavor, aroma and body of the coffee, it is also very important that coffee is brewed and served steaming hot, Braun coffee machine does just that. There are indeed some downsides as one can see from customer reviews, but still, with its price, the Braun Kf560 delivers optimum results and durability that will allow it to pay for itself many times over.

Larry Magid: Common Sense Media Report Shines Positive Light on Kids and Social Media

Common Sense Media just published a report that paints a mostly positive picture of social media's impact on teens' social and emotional well-being. Social Media, Social Life: How Teens View Their Digital Lives points out that "Many more teens report a positive impact of social media use on their emotional well-being than a negative one," and pretty much debunks the myth about "Facebook depression" with the conclusion that "Very few teens think that using their social network site makes them more depressed."

2012-06-26-ScreenShot20120626at4.51.31PM.png

(Source: Common Sense Media)

Not surprisingly the report found that 90 percent of teens have used social networking and that 75 percent currently have a social networking profile. More than two-third of kids (68 percent) are on Facebook, compared to 6 percent for Twitter and 1 percent for GooglePlus and MySpace. More than a third (34 percent) visit their favorite social networking site "several times a day" and 23 percent are "heavy" social media users.

The report is based on an online survey of 1,030 13 to 17 year-olds conducted between February and March of this year.

Social-emotional well-being

The study found that teens are much more likely to say that social media has a positive impact than a negative one on social-emotional well-being. About three in 10 (29 percent) say that social networking makes them feel "less shy" and "more outgoing" while 20 percent say it makes them feel more confident. About the same number (19 percent) say they feel more popular and 19 percent also say they're more sympathetic to others. The positives far outweigh the negatives with only 5 percent saying that social networking makes them feel less outgoing while "4 percent feel worse about themselves, less confident, and less popular after using their social networking site; and 3 percent feel shyer," according to the report.

The report concluded "Among all teen social network users, only 5 percent say using their social networking site makes them feel more depressed, compared to 10 percent who say it makes them feel less depressed.

Though use of social networking seems to help a lot more kids than it hurts, when it comes to social-emotional well-being, most kids (83%) say that social networking doesn't make much of a difference to whether or not they feel depressed or better or worse about themselves (81 percent).

Sharp contrast to the naysayers

The report stands in sharp contrast to some naysayers who worry that Facebook might cause social and emotional distress, depression or social isolation. In fact, more than half (52 percent) said that "social media users say using such media has mainly helped their relationships with friends, compared to just 4 percent who say social media use has mainly hurt their relationships."

And, despite what some pundits have written, social media hasn't diminished teens' desire to maintain face-to-face relationships. Just under half (49 percent) of teens said that their favorite way to communicate with their friends is in person, followed by texting (33 percent) with social networking (7 percent) just slightly ahead of talking on the phone (4 percent). Still, there are some kids (43 percent) who agreed that they sometimes wish they could "unplug." The survey reported that "Most teens feel that, on balance, using social media has helped rather than hurt their relationships. About half of all teens (54 percent) say social networking has helped them feel more connected with family and friends (2 percent say it's made them feel less connected, and the rest say it hasn't made much difference one way or the other)."

Dark spots

There were some findings that raise the caution flag. For example, 44 percent of teens say that "they often or sometimes encounter sexist (44 percent), homophobic (43 percent) or racist (43 percent) comments online and 24 percent said they "often" encounter some type of derogatory speech. But it's important to put this in context. Just because someone finds negative speech online doesn't mean that most or even a substantial portion of people are posting it. A single negative post could be seen by a great number of people. Besides, there is no evidence from this survey that online use encourages negative speech, it simply reflects it as it reflects all good and bad aspects of life.

Surprising results for 'less happy teens'

The study broke down responses between the roughly 90 percent of teens who are "in good emotional shape" and the 10 percent who fell into the category of "less happy teens." Among those teens who are "less happy," 50 percent report that social networking makes them more outgoing compared to 17 percent of the "happiest teens." Less happy teens are also more likely to feel more popular (34 percent vs 15 percent), less shy (49 percent vs. 21 percent) but at the same time these less happy teens are also more likely to report negative feelings such as "worse about myself (15 percent vs. 1 percent) and more depressed (18 percent vs. <.5 percent="" these="" same="" less="" happy="" teens="" also="" wish="" their="" parents="" would="" spend="" time="" on="" and="" other="" devices="" vs="" of="" happier="" readability="18.5339329518">

One size doesn't fit all

The survey doesn't attempt to explain why less happy teens have both positive and negative emotional reactions that differ from happier ones but it does reinforce the fact that how people respond to social media is very individual and personal which makes it very hard to generalize and even harder come up with a "one-size-fits-all" type of explanation or solution for any perceived problems.

The report illustrates that social media, while mostly positive, can have some negative impacts on some people, but that's true for anything in life including watching movies, reading books, eating certain foods, playing sports or even going to school. We live in an increasingly complex world were generalizations and sound bites -- while increasingly common -- are increasingly irrelevant. That's why it's so important for parents as well as teachers and others who look after kids to consider the needs of each child individually. While it's reassuring to know that the vast majority of kids are doing really well on social media, it's also important that we take extra time to support those kids who may be struggling.

Keio University's Kinectbased Haptic VR system lets you roll flat your own face

A research team at Keio University has built a fun haptic virtual reality system that enables you to manipulate pictures with a rolling pin. A vertically mounted Kinect takes a 3D image that is then displayed on the projection surface. Using the rolling pin, the image can be rolled over and flattened as if it was dough -- with a series of motor cranks inside the implement to replicate the necessary feedback so you can feel what it'd be like to iron out your own face. It's been designed as a modern-day update to the penny-squashing machines you found in theme parks, except with slightly more grotesqueness. You can watch the face-mashing in glorious color after the break.

Have you ever been to Haldirams at Exide more. If you've been there, you must ha...ve noticed an old lady who sits there near the gate and sells papads. One thing you don't know for sure is that she comes there all the way from Bally each day to sell a some 30 packets of papads @ Rs. 10/packet. She is 85 years old. Yeah you read it right. She can barely stand straight. Helping Hands of Kolkata took the initiative to do something for her. A small gift hoping to put a smaal smile on her face. We handed over some cash that we had collected and a shawl, as a mark of respect. And we also bought all the 40 packets of papads she had got. She was thrilled to bits. We took her to the Victoria Memorial where we chatted for a while. She was so happy that she offered to sing a song. It was a great experience for all of us who were present today. We don't hope to achieve anything by doing this. A new study finds that a drop in testosterone levels over time is more likely to result from a man's behavioral and health changes than by aging. The study results will be presented Monday at The Endocrine Society's 94th Annual Meeting in Houston.

"Declining testosterone levels are not an inevitable part of the aging process, as many people think," said study co-author Gary Wittert, MD, professor of medicine at the University of Adelaide in Adelaide, Australia. "Testosterone changes are largely explained by smoking behavior and changes in health status, particularly obesity and depression."

Many older men have low levels of the sex hormone testosterone, but the cause is not known. Few population-based studies have tracked changes in testosterone levels among the same men over time, as their study did, Wittert said.

In this study, supported by the National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia, the authors analyzed testosterone measurements in more than 1,500 men who had measurements taken at two clinic visits five years apart. All blood testosterone samples underwent testing at the same time for each time point, according to Wittert.

After the researchers excluded from the analysis any men who had abnormal lab values or who were taking medications or had medical conditions known to affect hormones, they included 1,382 men in the data analysis. Men ranged in age from 35 to 80 years, with an average age of 54.

On average, testosterone levels did not decline significantly over five years; rather, they decreased less than 1 percent each year, the authors reported. However, when the investigators analyzed the data by subgroups, they found that certain factors were linked to lower testosterone levels at five years than at the beginning of the study.

"Men who had declines in testosterone were more likely to be those who became obese, had stopped smoking or were depressed at either clinic visit," Wittert said. "While stopping smoking may be a cause of a slight decrease in testosterone, the benefit of quitting smoking is huge."

Past research has linked depression and low testosterone. This hormone is important for many bodily functions, including maintaining a healthy body composition, fertility and sex drive. "It is critical that doctors understand that declining testosterone levels are not a natural part of aging and that they are most likely due to health-related behaviors or health status itself," he said.

Unmarried men in the study had greater testosterone reductions than did married men. Wittert attributed this finding to past research showing that married men tend to be healthier and happier than unmarried men. "Also, regular sexual activity tends to increase testosterone," he explained.

The study findings were presented by Andre Araujo, PhD, who was a visiting professor at the University of Adelaide and is vice president of epidemiology at New England Research Institutes, Watertown, Mass.
