Sandhill Crane recovering thanks to local animal rescue

Carrollwood, Florida - The Suncoast Animal League in Palm Harbor is no stranger to animal rescues, but the rescues are usually fur and four legs.

Director Rick Chaboudy was called last week after a?mother Sandhill Crane was hit by a car in north Tampa.?

Sandhills mate for life and this bird and her mate are rearing two chicks.

The Sandhill family was feeding on the median of a busy road, and while the rest of the family made it safely through traffic, a vehicle hit the mother, breaking her leg.

Workers at an apartment complex saw what happened and called The Suncoast Animal League.

Chaboudy crossed the bay to help the injured bird.

"Upon arrival and a search of the near-by landscaping, I found her laying against their sign, hidden under thick bushes. She immediately tried to escape but would stumble after a few steps. Afraid she may take flight, I quickly got the net over top of her. After a brief wrestling match, getting her out of the net, protecting myself from her beak while controlling her legs and wings, I had the proverbial," bird in hand." Her mate left to care for the chicks.

After contacting a crane expert in Sarasota, I was referred to a volunteer from the Seabird Sanctuary who works with cranes. We examined the crane and found a break in the right leg where the leg and the foot meet.?

Christina, the Sanctuary volunteer, explained to me that this was a lucky bird. The break was very fixable and in one of the few areas on a bird like this that can properly heal. A splint was placed on the injured area.

Hopefully, her leg will heal quickly and she can be returned to her mate and chicks. And yes, it is a dangerous area but no matter where she is released, she will try to return to them. That is her family and they mate for life."

The Suncoast Animal League and the Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary survive on donations.
