Well, it turns out there is a correlation between sleep and weight which may be close. Scientific research confirms that not getting enough sleep can interrupt your weight loss efforts.
Why?
Because sleep deprivation alters the body?s levels of hormones. In relation to weight loss, the hormones most closely related are leptin and ghrelin. Sleep deprivation (less than 7 hours a night) causes a drop in the levels of leptin in the body, while at the same time causing an increase in the levels of ghrelin.
How do these hormones come into play with weight?
Ghrelin is a hormone produced in the gastrointestinal tract. It is responsible for stimulating appetite so we eat. Leptin is like the opposite of ghrelin. Leptin is produced within the fat cells, and its responsibility is to signal the brain we are full so we will stop eating.
In other words: if we?re not getting enough sleep, we have less of the hormone that will let our brain know we?re full, and we have more of the hormone that tells our body to eat.
The result?
We?re hungrier, so we eat more, and we will either gain weight or have a difficult time losing weight.
It makes sense if you think about it.
When you sleep, your body?s processes slow down. You?re not moving, running around chasing kids and getting to meetings, but if your body is awake more often than the norm, it thinks you need fuel to keep going and it will send signals that encourage you to eat so it can keep up the processes that operate when your body is awake and on ?all cylinders?.
The moral of the story?
Make sure you get the 7-10 hours of sleep your body needs each night.
