The Humane Society of Charlotte is helping 50 dogs and 10 exotic birds after they were rescued from Leland and New Hanover Counties.
According to the Humane Society, over 150 dogs were taken from a "commercial dog breeding operation." The animals were transported to several animal welfare organizations throughout the state, and several of them are being cared for in Charlotte.
Officials believe that the Leland County location was used for breeding and the New Hanover County location was where the dogs were being sold.
The breeding operation included many small breeds, including poodles, Yorkies, Shih Tzus, Lhasa Apsos, schnauzers, pugs and mixes of the small breeds.
The animals are being evaluated and receiving medical treatment so that they can then be placed in foster homes.
The Humane Society of Charlotte is accepting monetary donations and supplies to assist with fostering the puppies and dogs.
Needed items include:
? Gently used towels
? Puppy pads
? Canned dog food
? Esbilac, puppy food (for nursing mother dogs)
? Ziploc gallon sized freezer bags (for food storage).
Items can be dropped off at their 2700 Toomey Ave. shelter. The office is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. this weekend.
