Texas cattle raisers want a federal standard on ethanol waived because of soaring corn prices.
The Fort Worth-based Texas and Southwest Cattle Raisers Association joined Texas Gov. Rick Perry on Friday in asking the Environmental Protection Agency to waive all or part of the Renewable Fuels Standard.
The rule requires that renewable fuels such as ethanol be blended into gasoline.
In a release, the association said that a letter was sent to EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson asking that the rule be waived because of soaring corn prices.
Drought conditions around the nation have caused prices for corn, a staple feed for cattle, to rise sharply. More than 40 percent of the annual U.S. corn supply was used to meet the federal standard, Perry said in the release.
In the release, Joe Parker, a rancher and president of the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers, said that consumers have been hurt as well by the rising price of corn because it leads to lower profits for cattle raisers and higher beef prices.
